G. ** Mary Hodgkin (1882-1956) was born in a very affluent Quaker family of Darlington in County Durham, North East England. She was the daughter of Jonathan Backhouse Hodgkin (1843-1926), banker and mayor of Darlington, and of Mary Anna Pease, both from Quaker families. The Hodgkins lived in the majestic Victorian manor of Elm Ridge in Darlington. Mary Hodgkin was the secretary of Darlington Town Mission for many years. He was friendly with John Wesley and undertook the formidable task of translating the Bible. Joseph Storrs Fry, the chocolate merchant lived in Frenchay and another noted Frenchay Quaker family was the Tucketts.

Contemporary full polished calf. Gilt crest to front board:"The Society Of Writers To The Signet." Spine with 5 raised bands and original red leather title label. Clean English text. Very good for its age. This was Gurney's first book, and one of the best early descriptions of the Quaker creed. Gurney was prominent in philanthropy and social reform; he was much involved in the anti-slavery movement, along with Wilberforce, Clarkson, and Buxton.
