Surface measures approx. 445 x 300 mm. Image area measures approx. 210 x 130 mm. some superficial soiling, light creasing in the margins. Cooper published his first fiction, Precaution, in 1820. The following year, he published The Spy, which marked the onset of international fame and a degree of wealth. The family lived in Europe from 1826 until 1833. .

Spine frayed at head and tail; some dampstaining to covers; bookseller's label of "Davis Bros., Golden Rule Bazaar, San Francisco, Cal." on lower pastedown; hinges splitting, and pinhole (defunct wormhole?) internally to upper hinge; some foxing to endpapers and page edges, sporadic spotting elsewhere. Fair condition. Evidently a cheap, unillustrated edition of this popular history of California, with much on the gold discoveries. .
