(London: Collins, 1986). 8vo; original brown boards; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 158; map; colour photographs. Reverse of dustwrapper very slightly foxed. Near fine condition. "North-west Namibia is a desert - rugged, utterly uncompromising, frequently beautiful and always fascinating. It comprises two adjoining tribal homelands, Damaraland and Kaokoland, and until recently was virtually untouched by the intrusive influence of the technological age. Here live great herbivores such as elephants, rhinos, and giraffe, in an environment unlike any other in Africa. Living amongst them are Himba Pastoralists, a tribe that time has left behind. The author joined the area's resident ecologist Garth Owen-Smith, to see for himself what has happened here. This book deals with the people they met and the wildlife encountered - it tackles the problems caused by the war between the South African Army and the Swapo guerillas which has spilled over into the area; the poaching that is going… Read More

Very good condition. ". . . the UN persisted in its condemnation of South Africa's involvement in Namibia, noting in 1959 that the Union was administering the territory in a manner contrary to the mandate, the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Court of Justice. Finally, in 1960 the only two African members of the UN General Assembly who had also been members of the League of Nations, Ethiopia and Liberia, took the matter to the International Court. Four years later the judges, in a split vote, narrowly declared that they had no power to decide the dispute, a decision that brought joy to the South African Government and gloom to the Namibian lobbyists." - Illustrated History of South Africa: The Real Story, p. 460. .

"This book contains the facsimile reprint of the first African newspaper published in Namibia, South West News - Suidwes Nuus. Issued in 1960 in Windhoek, it has to be regarded as the earliest example of independent African journalism in Namibia. South West News was the only newspaper in Namibia at the time with a non-racial and nationalist concept. It was also a community paper for the Old Location, the African township in Windhoek, whose residents were threatened with forced removals. The paper was launched shortly after the shootings in December 1959 at the Old Location. It published statements by Hosea Kutako, SWANU as well as OPO/SWAPO and the testimonies of Mburumba Kerina, Jariretundu Kozonguizi and Sam Nujoma at the hearings of the UN Committee on South-West Africa in New York. (no place: Government of South Africa, 1963). Volumes I and IX. Two 4to volumes; original pale grey papered boards, with lettering in black to upper cover in each case, and similar lettering to the spine of the second volume; pp. (vi) +40, (x) + 116; two folding colour maps in Volume I; numerous photographs in Volume IX. Boards slightly soiled and bumped; a little spotting. Good to very good condition. In November of 1960, the governments of Liberia and Ethiopia submitted an application to the International Court of Justice to institute proceedings against the government of South Africa, on the grounds that the Union [shortly to become the Republic] had, in their view, failed to fulfill the obligations connected with its United Nations mandate over the territory of South West Africa. These volumes represent part of the South African government's response in its own defence. The second volume is particularly interesting, presenting a photo-essay on Namibia and its peoples. .
