Description:
(Cape Town: David Philip, 1991) 0864861710. 4to; laminated pictorial boards; pp. 123 + (iv); photographs; map. Boards very slightly rubbed; earlier owner's name on front free endpaper; occasional fox spot. Very good condition. "The Cold Choice is the record of four years' travelling with Operation Hunger teams around South Africa. The flip side of the glossy tourist-view of the country, this book shows South Africa as it is experienced by the majority of its people: a succession of tumbledown relocation camps and overcrowded townships with bad roads, no sewerage, minimal water reticulation and no street lighting. Yet, in this depressing squalor, Struan Robertson found something more rewarding than breathtaking tourist views. 'When I began this project I expected to record suffering and injustice. There was, indeed, plenty of both but what struck me most was the resilience of the human spirit. Even in the worst relocation camps such as Tentergate or Padstowe I found people who… Read More

Description:
(Cape Town, Struik, 1990). Folio; original cloth-backed paper over boards; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; small, light tape stains to pictorial endpapers; gift inscription on half-title; pp. 160; numerous full colour photographs. Near fine condition. "This magnificently illustrated work is unique among the many photographic books on South Africa, for it presents a daringly original collection of pictures that invite the reader to look afresh at the country's natural and man-made landscapes. The majority of the images were captured from the air and provide stunning views of the surface of the land - its shapes, colours, patterns and textures - including the various effects of man's activities on earth's delicate and sensitive skin. . . . In these pictures Herman Potgieter has renounced the obvious and produced images of supreme originality. To do justice to photography of this calibre, the greatest care has been taken with all aspects of the book's design, materials and… Read More

(Stockholm: Futurniture and Rikta Kommunikation, 1999). Oblong 4to; original black papered boards; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; unpaginated (but, pp. 48); full-page captioned colour photographs. Trace of damp-ripple to top edge of dustwrapper, and foxing to reverse side; occasional fox spot. Very good condition. Uncommon. "Irmelie Krekin flew to South Africa in late August 1999. She is considered one of Sweden's foremost experimental style and fashion photographers. At the same time, Zwelethu Mthethwa, renowned artist and teacher of photography and painting at the Michaelis Art School in Cape Town, made the trip to Sweden. They had both been given the open mission to photograph people and environments in cities, suburbs and in the countryside. The two photographers had access to guides and drivers who proposed itineraries but they were free to deviate from the plan or to propose other schedules. A week later, Krekin and Mthethwa returned home. ... The photo essays are simple but distinct… Read More

Description:
(Johannesburg: A Day in the Life of South Africa (Pty) Ltd., 1982). Folio; original red rexine; spine gilt; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; unpaginated; lavishly illustrated with colour and monochrome photographs. Dustwrapper edges very slightly curled; a little foxing to prelims. Very good condition. "There have been many attempts to capture in words and pictures the totality of South Africa. But, up to today, all the attempts have been by individuals, who could not hope to succeed, for no single person can ever accurately portray all the beauty, the richness, the diverse social structure, the controversy that comprises this Land in the Sun. This book does the impossible. It takes one ordinary day, Wednesday 26th May, 1982, and through the lenses of thousands of photographers, it brings you South Africa, as seen by South Africans." .
