1834. Very Good +. 4 printed enlistment slips for the Ulster Artillery, Sugerties, Ulster County, N.Y. The smaller one has an engraved eagle holding arrows and a shield in the upper left corner and is filled out by Captain C. Hoyt for the enlistment of William W. Conyes on June 4, 1834. The larger filled-in one had an engraved eagle in the center, standing on a shield and looking to the right; it was filled out by Captain Conyes for the enlistment of Peter B. Ransom on June 13, 1840. The other two have an engraved eagle in the center holding arrows and a shield and looking to the left; they have not been used. In Very Good+ Condition: lightly soiled; closed 1-cm. tear from upper edge of one of the blank slips.

Sir Leslie Ward (1851-1922), English caricaturist and portrait painter, signed his works 'Spy.' After serving in the British army, Major General Sir Reginald Arthur James Talbot (1841-1929) represented Stafford in Parliament from 1869 to 1874. Returning to the army, he fought in the Anglo-Zulu War and took part in the unsuccessful Nile Expedition to relieve General Gordon in Khartoum. In 1899 he became General Officer Commanding the British troops in Egypt. He became Governor of Victoria, Australia, in 1904. In Near Fine- Condition: minor foxing in upper and right-hand margins; otherwise, clean and bright.

1816. Very Good. 1 leaf folded, dated Sept. 2, 1816, from John Johnson, Sussex Brigade Judge Advocate, addressed to Jacob S. Thomson, Brigade Paymaster, Marksborough [Marskboro, N.J.]. Thomson is asked to collect the $50 fine from Captain Thomas M. Armstrong. Jacob S. Thomson was the paymaster of the Sussex Brigade in New Jersey. On July 2, Captain Thomas M. Armstrong had been found guilty of disobedience of orders and unbecoming conduct to his superior officer. The judge, John Johnson (1764-1829), represented Sussex Co. in the New Jersey Assembly in 1804 and 1805, and was a judge of the Court of Common Pleas from 1816 to 1825. In Very Good Condition: folds; exterior lightly soiled; otherwise, clean and bright.

Creighton is seeking information regarding money paid to General James Denny in order to assist John Barr, the administrator of Denny's estate. William Creighton (1778-1851) was Ohio's first secretary of state (1803-1808) and represented Ohio in Congress from 1813 to 1816 and from 1826 to 1830. Major General James Denny (1767-1815) served in the War of 1812. Although he was born and died in Pennsylvania, he spent years in Ohio. A pencilled note below the letter indicates that Denny had received funds to pay the Ohio militia and volunteers. In Very Good- Condition: light creases; just starting to separate at several folds; clean and bright.
