Enoch Lewis (1776-1856) was a Pennsylvania Quaker and a mathematician who edited several mathematical works and published several textbooks, including one on spherical projections. He was an abolitionist, establishing the monthly journal African Observer and taking an active role in the Underground Railroad in Chester County, Pa. In this pamphlet he examines another issue of concern to the Society of Friends, that of legal and judicial oaths, which Friends refused to take. Very scarce. Description:
Philadelphia: James P. Parke, 1808. Hardcover. Very Good. The Second American, from the Second London edition. Vol. 1 only, of 3 volumes. xxxii, 289 p.; 18 cm. Contemporary full calf with six spine compartments between gilt rules; red leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title. Two inscriptions on front free endpaper: "Thomas Jackson's Book"; "Presented to Eliza Hayhurst by her friend Anna Lewis June 18th 1836." The author, Thomas Clarkson (1760-1846), was an English abolitionist who had gotten to know many Quakers while working to abolish slavery in Britain. The Slave Trade Act, abolishing the British slave trade, was enacted the year before this edition of A Portraiture of Quakerism was published. In Very Good Condition: leather is rubbed; small scrapes on spine with loss from leather label; loss of quarter-sized circle of leather on back board; light foxing throughout; otherwise clean and tight.

Philadelphia: Tract Association of Friends, 1890. Pamphlet. Very Good. 8 p.; 18 cm. Pamphlet without wrapper. Caption title. No publication information, but "TAF" above title. This is the emblem used by the Tract Association of Friends, established in Philadelphia in 1816. Although this tract was also issued by other tract societies, "No. 102" at the lower edge of the first page identifies it as part of the Tract Association of Friends' series. Presents the life of Ralph Dixon (d. 1854), who was apprenticed to a shoemaker in England and later enlisted in the 31st regiment of foot and was sent to Ireland where he was injured at the Battle of Talavera. After returning home, he joined the Society of Friends, after which he could no longer take the oath required to receive his army pension. Philadelphia, 1861. Hardcover. Good +. 16 x 10 cm. Mid-19th-century calf; black spine label with gilt-tooled title "Receipts. Blind-rolled decorative border on each board. All page edges black. Pages are ruled portrait-length. The first 2 pages contain records of payments from Samuel Bettle Jr. (1774-1861) to family members and the following 4 contain payments related to the settlement of Samuel Bettle's estate after his death in April 1861. Samuel Bettle was a member of a Quaker family in Philadelphia. Several pages following that contain pencilled records of the standings for the 8 National League teams as of Aug. 5, 1904, as well as a drawing of a baseball field and the scores of several Phillies games against Boston and Cincinnati. The remainder of the notebook is blank. In Good+ Condition: leather torn at tail of spine; gilt lacking from spine label; pages removed at back of notebook, leaving back hinge weak; otherwise, clean and solid.
