Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859) was an English botanist who trained as a printer, but was encouraged to follow his interest in botany after coming to Philadelphia in the early 19th century. He spent much of the rest of his life studying the flora and fauna of the United States, publishing Manual of the Ornithology of the United States and of Canada, heading the botanical gardens at Harvard University, and working at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. This is one of several important papers of that were published in the Transactions of the American Philosophical Society. Scarce. The Vulcan Assembly of Philadelphia, founded in 1902, was a fraternal organization of industrial engineers, "who at some time . . . had charge of a steam engine and boiler." In addition to the organization's constitution and bylaws, this publication contains an alphabetical list of members with each one's home address, occupation, and business address. Also includes many full-page advertisements for related Philadelphia businesses. Some of the names of members have penciled checkmarks next to them. In Very Good- Condition: front wrapper slightly scraped; very light dampstain along fore-edge and gutter throughout; marginalia in members list, as described; otherwise clean.

Joseph Henry (1797-1878), one of the founding fathers of electrical technology, was the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. In this paper he responds to Faraday's confirmation of Henry's earlier discovery relating to electricity by describing further experiments he had carried out after moving to Princeton. Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: disbound from a larger volume; 1-cm. closed tear from gutter in each leaf; chip out along gutter of first leaf; clean and bright.
