Autograph letter signed, dated Oct. 22, 1902 (on Corsham Court, Wiltshire, stationary) to unknown recipient praising the Burnham Rifle Club, which had been formed in 1899 (either the first or second rifle club formed in England). Methuen concluded: "I should consider it a great honour to be elected a patron." Lieutenant General Paul Sanford Methuen (1845-1932) was captured during the Boer War in March 1902 but released tne returned to England during the summer. In Very Good- Condition: one horizontal fold; exterior is lightly soiled; interior is clean and bright.

Stelle; first blank leaf following bears inscription from Christmas 1912: "Presented to C. Norman Detweiler by S.C. Stelle." Harry Castlemon was the pseudonym of Charles Austin Fosdick (1842-1915), the author of many 3-to-6-volume series for boys published following the Civil War. This volume presents the adventures of Don Gordon and his brother Hubert at Bridgeport Military Academy. Contains instructions for various gymnastic activies and games, illustrated with drawings of boys performing the motions. By 1900 the author, Horace Butterworth, had become manager of the University of Chicago's football team. He was strongly opposed to the creation of professional football teams. In 1903 and 1904 he was director of athletics at Northwestern University and in 1907 he coached Temple University's football team to a 4-and-2 record. This title is part of a series identified on the cover as the Fur, Feather and Fin Series, but on the half title page as the Fur and Feather Series, six titles of which are listed on the half title page verso.
