Stipple engraving of Catherine of Braganza as queen, with her hair in ringlets, wearing a loose gown and mantle fastened on her right shoulder. She is seated with her left hand on an open book beside a crown and feeding a lamb with her right. First published in 1826 in the folio edition of Edmund Lodge's Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain. Catherine of Braganza (1638-1705), wife of Charles the Second, was Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1662 to 1685. After she returned to Portugal as a widow, she served as regent of Portugal in 1701, 1704, and 1705. She is credited with popularizing tea drinking, common among the Portuguese nobility, to the English court. In Very Good Condition: minimal light foxing; otherwise, clean and bright.

Stipple engraving of Charlotte Stanley, Countess of Derby (1599-1664), granddaughter of William I, Prince of Orange. She was famous for her vigorous defence of Lathom House during the English Civil War. After her exile to the Isle of Man, she held out until the Royalists had been defeated and her husband executed, retaining, as David Hume said, "the glory of being the last person in the three kingdoms, and in all their dependent dominions, who submitted to the victorious rebels." The Union Benevolent Association was established in 1831 to provide assistance to Philadelphia residents by lending stoves to help heat their homes during a harsh winter, along with wood and coal. The intention was to help the "worthy poor" without regard for religion or race. The activities of the organization have evolved since 1831; today it provides grants to projects to fight poverty. This report contains the constitution and by-laws of the Union Benevolent Association, as well as detailed data about the people with whom the association had worked in the previous year.
