This helpful guide was written before the Norwegian shipping lines were combined to provide mail and freight service to coastal villages, as well as a fine voyage up the western coast from Bergen to Kirkenes on the Russian border. Although the ships have become larger and more comfortable, this is a delightful guide of what was seen in the 1950s, some 70 years ago, and how the scenery remains unchanged. Pages 64. Very good hardback with printed cover with a seagull, and very good dustjacket, having some edgewear, protected in a clear, mylar sleeve. I recommend taking it along on your next Hurtigruten voyage. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1858. Book. Illus. by John Leech 13 Hand Colored Plates, Plus 70 Text Wood Engravings. Very Good. 3/4 Leather. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bound in 19th Century 3/4 brown calf, with black cloth boards, gilt band lines and title on the spine. Some edge wear, mostly at the corners, but solid at the hinges and clean. Inside, no foxing or browning, but occasionally some age toning. Pages (xii, 412). Notable for the handcolored, satiric engravings of John Leech (1817-1864) who produced cartoons for Punch humor magazine for 20 years, illustrated Dickens Christmas Carol, as well as several novels for Surtees. Surtees, unlike Dickens, wrote mannered stories of upper class English life in the country, especially hunting and horseback riding. A very nice copy..

Limited Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Larger than the 20 shilling A & C Black series, thia ia copy 53 of only 350 and signed by the fine watercolor artist, Australian Mortimer Menpes. He talked the publisher into using his daughter as the author, an experiment that was not repeated. Cream cloth with a lovely design of green and brown lines aand vines, with bright gilt title on the front and the unfaded spine. Top edge gilt. Edgewear at the bottom edge and less soiling than usual on the ccream cloth, which was the standard binding for the Black limited editions. Very nice inside, with no browning or foxing or prior owner marks. .

Title continued, "Catalogue with Purchasers' Names and Prices Realized of the Scarce and Curious Collection of Books, Silver Plate, Prints, Pictures, Wood Blocks, Copper Plates, and Bewick Relics, Etc.". Sold by auction at Newcastle-Upon-Tyne on February 5, 6, 7 and August 26, 1884. This series of auctions took place following the death of Iisabella Bewick, the last surviving daughter of thomas Bewick. A fine reference to the Bewick woodcuts and sketches, as well as his household furnishings, with full page woodcuts a nice bonus. Original brown cloth with slight edgewear, more wear at the spine ends, and a gilt title on the spine that is some dulled. Inside, clean and tight..

Fine color plates of Heidelberg, Lake Como, Mont Blanc, Venice, New York Bay and Staten Island, Constantinople, Windermere and Bantry Bay, all with a bit of foxing. Each color plate has a short essay about the place. No foxing but slight soiling or age toning to the pages. First edition of this book was 1859, and this is the stated Second Edition, so circa 1863. Full green morocco binding with elaborate gilt designs on both boards, neatly rebacked. Ticket at back confirms this bound by B. West in London. On the spine, raised bands , bright gilt lettering and gilt box designs between the bands. All edges gilt. Intended as a special gift binding , very elaborate Victorian design. Pages on about half the signatures are uncut at top or outer edge..

A splendid copy, easily very good plus in blue greg cloth with bright gilt titles on both the front cover and the spine. A series of black geometric lines also on front and spine. Top edge gilt. Very slight wear at the corners and spine ends. A hint of foxing occasionally, but not affecting the fine plates nor the tissue guards with captions.Nicholls, the artist, was known for floral and landscape watercolors, and these are evocative of sunny days in Cornwall. A later printing of the 1765 first edition. Although the title page still says 1765, this has three maps not in the first edition as well as a Gravure double a Monsiere Cassini de Thury Seigneur de Villetaneuse. It has all the 29 analytical maps of the first edition, but 14 have been improved and are dated 1766. These maps divide France according to public and private institutions or services, various geographical and political divisions, but also military, ecclesiastical, juridical, geneaological, commencial and financial divisions. Several of the analytical maps and all sea charts were drawn by Rizzi Zannoni, and the road maps by Michel, Royal geographer, both under the direction of Louis Charles Desnos. Leipzig: Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1902. Book. Very Good. 3/4 Leather. Later Reprint. 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. As customary, this is a rebinding of the Tauchnitz reprint, this time in 3/4 brown morocco, with brown boards and raised bands on the spine. Fresh gilt titles on both volumes. Slight wear at the corners and spines are not faded. Very clean and tight inside, with no prior owner marks. This might have been a library book, as there is a slight scar at the back inside board, where something has been removed. No other marks inside or out. No foxing and no browning to the paper. No evidence of the publication year after 1903, but probably 1910s or 1920s. Samuel Rutherford Crockett was a prolific Scottish novelist, often writing historical adventures like this one, set in rural Scotland. .

Original hardback, with a Holbein drawings of a man in black hat with brown hair on the front cover. No edgewear, slight soiling on the boards. The book was badly made, when opened it forced the spine to tear the outer paper hinges. In this case, the spine is still present and is protected in a clear, mylar dustjacket. Iniside hinges are tight, very clean with no prior owner marks. Thorough descriptions of each plate, and captions in German and English. The book was printed in Belgium just before WW Two broke out. A solid book despite the faulty construction of the outer spine. .

Thackeray is the author for the sketch, The Fashionable Authoress, and another Captain Rood and Mr. Pigeon. Douglass Jerrold authors five, including The Cockney, Debtor and creditor, and The Printer's Devil. Nimrod does two, Henry Brownning authors three, and Wm. Howitt contributes The Young Squire.
