Beautifully illustrated with 12 fold-out hand-colored illustrations, 6 colored engravings (note - the chair pattern is listed first in the contents, though it's actually located at the back of the book), and numerous wood and steel engravings. Contents include works of fiction, poetry and music. Three-quarter leather binding with gilt lettering on the spine. All 6 colored engravings and all 12 fold-out hand-colored illustrations are present.Condition:The front cover has a couple light stains. Pieces of leather have chipped away at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Three of the cover corners are worn. There is a crack at the front between 2 illustrated pages - the 1st 7 pages leading up to the crack are attached, though a bit shaky. This is a bound volume of 12 issues of the publication "THE AMERICAN MAGAZINE of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge." The issues are dated October, 1836 to September, 1837. Volume III. Profusely illustrated with engravings throughout - each issue begins with a full-page engraving. There is an index at the front. Three-quarter leather binding with marbled covers. The issues contain non-fiction articles, biographical sketches, poetry and music. Published by John L. Sibley & William D. Ticknor in Boston.Condition:Wear along the edges of the boards. The top and bottom edges of the spine are worn down. Splits along the left and right edges of the spine resulting in the covers being just a bit shaky. Nice interior - the pages are generally clean with occasional staining, foxing and tears here and there. Overall the volume is in Good- condition.

This is a scarce, original issue of the "American Sunday Monthly Magazine" from December 6, 1914. This issue contains Chapter X and most of Chapter XI of the story "The Star Rover" by JACK LONDON. Prior to being published in book form, "The Star Rover" first appeared within this magazine in serialized installments. The story contains an illustration between pages 10 and 11. Also included in this issue are a few other literary works (please see the photos for the complete list), and numerous illustrated advertisements. There are 18 numbered pages, not including the covers. The magazine measures 14" tall x 10 3/4" wide. The "American Sunday Monthly Magazine" was a Sunday newspaper supplement of the Los Angeles Examiner.Condition:Light soiling to the covers. There are occasional small tears along the perimeter of the pages. Both covers and all pages are firmly attached to the staples. Nice interior - the pages are clean with no notable issues found. Overall the issue is in Very Good- condition.

This is an antique issue of the periodical "The American University Magazine" that contains a very early account of the game of BASKETBALL in its infancy. February 1896; American University Magazine Publishing Company; New York. There are numerous drawings and photographs throughout the issue, as well as illustrated advertisements at the back. The highlight of this issue is a very interesting, early basketball account written by Lester Hoole (manager of the Yale basketball team). The article is five pages long and contains two black & white photographs, and three diagrams of the court. The article is more or less an introduction of the game to the reader, with explanations of the layout of the court and descriptions of the method of play. At this time, the game was still in its infancy (it was invented in 1891) and differed greatly from the sport we know today. This issue features an early (possibly the 1st) published engraving of the famous American explorer MERIWETHER LEWIS (of "Lewis and Clark" fame). In addition to the engraving, the issue also includes a chapter titled "Notice of Captain M. Lewis" - from the Notice: "The portrait of captain Lewis, given in the present number, is taken from a drawing of that officer belonging to his fellow traveller, governor Clark, who considers it an excellent likeness, and prizes it highly. The gentleman who lent it to us remained here but a short time, and was obliged to take it with him: to which circumstance it is owing that our engraving from it is not executed in so good a style as we could have wished. The newspaper measures 18" tall when unfolded. Please see the photos - all pages are shown.Condition:The pages are age-toned and somewhat brittle. Tears and chipping along the perimeter of the pages with pieces missing, most notably at the left and right edges. Tears/pieces missing along the vertical crease of the 1st and last pages.
