This is a clean copy of "BARBARY SHORE" by Norman Mailer (author of "The Naked and the Dead") with its original dust jacket. 1951; Rinehart & Company; New York. The dust jacket is un-clipped with the original $3.00 price intact on the front flap. From the dust jacket: "Only the author of The Naked and the Dead could have written this remarkable novel about our post-war world. There are only six principal characters in Barbary Shore - two women, three men, and a child. Yet out of their extraordinary relationships - to each other, to the world around them - Norman Mailer has extracted the dilemma of our times. A novel of action, it is also a novel of ideas, and the interplay evokes a gamut of comedy, of horror, of excitement, of tragedy whose bearing on our world is inescapable. To some, Barbary Shore will read like a fascinating mystery story, filled with the echoes, the whispers, the ghosts of a world on the brink of disaster. to others - in the vividness of its characters and their struggles - it will… Read More

Description:
This is a World War I themed story told through a series of humorous letters, "CAMION CARTOONS" by Kirkland H. Day. 1919 1st edition; Marshall Jones Company; Boston. With illustrations throughout by the author. From the Introduction: "The writer of these letters and maker of these drawings went overseas with the first Technology unit; landed in France on the Fourth of July, 1917; began his service as a member of the Reserve Mallet, and was mustered into the American Army on October 1, 1917. In preparing the letters and cartoons for the press, it was thought best to begin where rumors of impending German surrender first appear in the correspondence, thus confining the humorously illustrated story to the last weeks of the war. Mr. Day wrote his letters with no intention or expectation of having them published; that is entirely the work of his friends, who believe that his impromptu sketches will be found to furnish ample justification for the existence of this book. When this book went to press, Mr. Day… Read More

Meacham, a member of the 32nd Massachusetts Volunteers in the Civil War, had his arm blown off by a shell near Petersburg in June, 1864. (In the booklet, Meacham writes: "As we were standing there, a shell came through one man and then exploded, taking my right arm off, and killing four of my comrades, making five lives destroyed and one wounded.") He printed and sold this pamphlet to make a living for himself and his ailing wife. This pamphlet is an example of postwar mendicant literature - items printed and sold for the support of their authors - and illustrate some of the hardships faced by soldiers in battle who became disabled veterans in later life. The booklet measures 7 3/8" tall x 4 1/2" wide; 24 pages.PROVENANCE: This copy appears to have been owned by a close… Read More

This is a presentation copy of "Fables of Field and Staff" by James Albert Frye. 1894 1st edition; The Colonial Company; Boston. With an inscription by the author dated 1894 on the front end paper. Decorative floral end papers. The book contains 7 stories about a volunteer infantry regiment - please see the photos for the contents. From the author's Preface: "The seven fables flanked by the covers of this book have to do with as many strange and wonderful happenings in the history of an infantry regiment - an infantry regiment of volunteers - in time of peace. They are seasoned abundantly, from end to end, with that which is stranger than fiction, but they differ slightly from 'muster-rolls for pay,' which, I am informed, one has to submit under oath. If you are of the volunteer service, you may be trusted, I think, to catch the spirit of these stories; if you are of Th Army, you may consider the tales as illustrative of the customs of a service to which your own is but distantly related; but if it is… Read More
