First Edition, of which 700 copies were printed. The prefatory advertisement was written by Horace Walpole. The noted English diplomat served as envoy-extraordinary to Russia from 1704 to 1710, at the end of which term the czar Peter presented him with his portrait set in diamonds. He later served as an envoy again to Russia, as well as to Prussia, Germany, and other countries. The original manuscript for this account was obtained by Walpole from Richard Owen Cambridge, who in turn had secured it from the Russian book collection of Monsieur Zolman, a secretary of English diplomat Stephen Poyntz. The author was tutor to Lord Cathcart's two sons, and accompanied them to St. Petersburg in 1768 following Lord Cathcart's appointment as ambassador-extraordinary to the Russian empress. His letters touch on the causes and progress of the Turkish War, the state of agriculture in Russia, the slavery of the Russian peasants, life at court, the situation of the Jews in Russia, &c. First Edition. Vandermaelen's monumental Atlas Universel (six volumes) was the first lithographically produced atlas and the first to show the world on a uniform scale, of 1:1,641,836. This is the first part of the second volume, devoted to Asia, and contains the complete series of maps on eastern Russia and Siberia, including separate maps of Kamtschatka, the Aleutian and Kurile Islands. There are also maps of China, Tartary, Turkey, Persia, Turkestan, and Korea.
