Description:
Amsterdam: Cóvens & Mortier, 1742. Engraved with period outline colour. Discolouration at center fold. Collection stamp on verso. A handsome, two-sheet map of Burgundy. This pair of maps of the ancient kingdom of Burgundy comes from a Dutch edition of De L'Isle's work entitled, Atlas Nouveau, Contenant Toutes Les Parties Du Monde, Ou sont exactement Remarquées les Empires, Monarchies, Royaumes, Etats, Republiques &c. Par Guillaume de l'Isle. Premier Géographe de sa Majesté. It was published by Covens and Mortier, brothers-in-law who continued the firm established by Pierre Mortier. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable… Read More

Nades, 1827. Watercolor, pen and ink, and pencil. Paper dissected and backed on brown linen. Two sheets, dissected and backed on linen. Sheet size: 26 3/8 x 40 1/8 inches. These are two hand-drawn maps of the small village of Nades in the Auvergne region in central France on folded, linen backed and dissected sheets done in 1827. They show the major geographical features: a number of forests and rivers, and property lots with the names of their owners. They appear to be maps of two different sections of the town, and may have been drawn by different surveyors.

Description:
London: Charles Price, 1712. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour, printed on laid paper, in excellent condition. A very fine impression of Charles Price's rare map of London and its environs, which became one of the most copied maps in England. Charles Price was a land surveyor and mapmaker, whose maps were nearly all collaborative efforts. After his association with John Senex, he worked with Jeremiah Seller and later George Willdey. During these collaborations he published a number of fine maps, which were all very decorative and extremely detailed. His maps are now extremely rare and are not often found on the market. This is one of the few maps that Price seems to have produced through his own efforts, and it is considered by many to be his finest work. It proved so popular upon publication that it quickly became one of the most pirated maps in England. Henry Overton, George Willdey, Thomas Bowles, Thomas Jefferys, and Laurie and Whittle all printed copies of Price's large London map.… Read More

Description:
London: Henry Overton, Bassett & Chiswell, 1713. Copper-engraved map, with full modern colour, very large marings, in very good condition, except for a stain at the bottom edge, well away from the image. A highly decorative map of Denbighshire by one of the greatest English cartographers Denbighshire in Wales, clearly a mountainous region, was surveyed by Christopher Saxton, which was Speed's source for this map. William Smith, Pursuivant at the College of Arms, was the apparent source for the coats of arms: one of which is that of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, Queen Elizabeth's favorite. In the town plan of Denbigh, in the upper right corner is a circular inset displaying what appears to be a castle. It is actually an unfinished and indeed never finished church that Leicester had tried to have built in Denbigh. Apparently, his unpopularity was part of the reason the church was never completed. The map is decorated with a sea monster, a classical god on horseback, and a ship. Henry Overton's… Read More

Description:
Paris [Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier], 1693. Engraved with full, period colour and gold embellishment. A magnificent 17th century sea chart of Copenhagen and surrounding regions. This large scale, beautifully coloured coastal chart of the coast of Sjaelland (Zéland), Denmark and the south-western tip of Sweden comes from Le Neptune François, a lavish collection of charts produced collaboratively by Hubert Jaillot and Pierre Mortier. As Koeman discovered in his research on this work (see P. Mortier, Atlantes Neerlandici, Maritime Atlases, p. 423-4), Mortier re-engraved the plates after the original French prototype Neptune François by Charles Pène and others in a richly coloured version and added to the titles the words "Levée et Gravée par Ordre du Roy à Paris 1693. though they were in fact engraved, coloured and published in Amsterdam by Mortier. The Netherlands and France were engaged in the War of the Grand Alliance at this time. Pierre Mortier's grandparents were French refugees, who left… Read More

Description:
[Amsterdam: Renard, 1739. Copper-engraved sea chart, with full orginal colour, in very good condition. A highly decorative sea chart of the English Channel, by the master-engraver Renard. The marine atlases of 17th and 18th century Holland were best sellers. The nation that led the world in overseas commerce also led in the arts of engraving and cartography. Plus, there was a large audience of mariners and mariners' parents, who needed to study the obscure straits and recently discovered island groups their sons were seeing. Louis Renard (1678-1746) was from a Huguenot family. He moved from France to the Netherlands and became a book dealer and publisher in Amsterdam in 1703. Louis Renard first published Atlas de la Navigation, et du Commerce qui se fait dans toutes les parties du monde in 1715. It was re-issued unchanged by the Ottens in 1739. The charts were printed from plates made by Frederick de Wit in 1675, Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas. These were corrected by Renard, using, primarily, van… Read More

Description:
London: Sold by H. Moll over against Devereux Court ... D. Midwinter ... & T. Bowles, 1715. Copper-engraving, with outline period hand-colouring, on two joined sheets, overall sheet size: 24 3/4 x 41inches. Good condition apart from a few small expertly repaired tears. A fine large format map inspired by the War of the Spanish Succession, and showing the 'Austrian' Netherlands as they stood following the treaty of Utrecht in 1713. This fascinating map can be dated to after the treaty of Utrecht (which was signed in 1712) as this was when Austria was given the Netherlands and they are designated the 'Austrian Netherlands' in the title. The 'no-later than' date is based on the assumption that Moll would have removed the Duke of Ormond as the dedicatee very soon after his impeachment in June 1715 for siding with the Jacobins. In addition to the main map, the engraved area also includes three smaller 'vignettes': one a small scale map of the main roads to Paris from the north, the second an extension of… Read More

A New & Exact Map of the Electorate of Brunswick-Lunenburg and ye rest of ye Kings Dominions in...

Description:
London: Herman Moll and Philip Overton, 1740. Hand-coloured engraving. Creased vertically where map was folded into atlas. Moll's Map of King George I's dominions in Germany. Brunswick-Lunenburg had been ruled by one family, descendants of Guelph, since the 13th century. One branch of this ancient family brought forth the Hanoverian Kings of Great Britain. It was the first of these Kings, George I, who was "so highly - pleased with this Map, that he Presented the Author with a Gold Medal, &c. as a mark of his Royal Favour, and approbation of the Performance." The map is, of course, dedicated to the King, and it is almost certainly the first English map of the recently crowned King's homeland. With a large Royal Coat of Arms, a striking, militaristic cartouche, an inset map of King George's route from Harburg to Greenwich, and an inset of Saxon Lauwenburg (recently added to the King's German dominions), Moll celebrates the King's ancestral homeland. He includes as well a numbered index of 50 forests… Read More

Description:
London: J. Bowles, P. Overton, T. Bowles, John King, 1740. Hand-coloured engraving. Repaired loss to bottom left corner outside neat line with facsimile border. Trimmed to platemark in places in top margin. Three vertical creases where map was folded into atlas. Multiple creases parallel to center fold. Splits in vertical folds have been rebacked. A superb map of France during the reign of Louis XV. This large, marvellous Moll map of France bears his distinctive style and the fruits of his diligence. There is a lengthy, alphabetical index of more than 280 towns giving their distances from Paris as well as names and locations of passes through the Pyrenees. The source for this information was Nicolas de Fer. The depiction of France itself includes the roads and the distances from point to point on those roads in leagues, a relatively new feature in maps. Also noted, by a sword and date, are battle sites in which the English were involved or "mentioned in History" as he puts it. The cartouche includes… Read More

Description:
London: H. Moll, T. & J. Bowles, P. Overton & J. King, 1730. Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, in excellent condition. A magnificent map celebrating the ascension of the House of Hanover to the British throne, depicting the new King's German possessions. Herman Moll first printed this map immediately after George I came to the throne of Great Britain. Queen Anne (Stuart) died without heir, and after the legislated exclusion of her close, but Catholic, relatives, her distant Protestant cousin, the Elector of Hanover, was deemed to be her legitimate heir. It is amusing to note that even though George I ruled from 1714 to 1728, it is said that he never learned to speak more than a few words of the "King's English." This map principally focuses on the large region of northern Germany that was ruled by George, one of the princes of the Holy Roman Empire. As depicted on the map, this realm included the great port of Hamburg, as well as the important cities of Lünenberg and Hanover, and… Read More

Paris: Alexis Hubert Jaillot, 1696. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour and gold embellishment, in excellent condition. A stunning map of Normandy by Alexis Jaillot, an exceptional example with gilt embellishments. One of the most important figures in French cartography, Nicolas Sanson initiated the great school of French geographers. Born in Abbeville in 1600, Sanson established his first printing house in Paris in 1638. He soon became geographer to the king, establishing himself as one of the most influential cartographers on the Continent. He was succeeded by his sons, Adrien and Guillaume, and by his son-in-law Pierre Duval, who continued to publish a wealth of maps using Sanson's name. At the close of the seventeenth century, Sanson's plates were purchased by the influential cartographer Alexis Hubert Jaillot, who continued to publish his maps and atlases under Sanson's title. This stunning map of Normandy is based on Sanson's map published in 1650, but was redrawn and enlarged by… Read More

Housed in period green morocco backed case, with armorial bookplate of the Borghese family. London: Aaron Arrowsmith, 1812. Copper engraved case map in six sections, dissected and laid on linen. Overall, if joined, 52 1/2 x 77 3/4 inches. Minor soiling at edges. First issue of Arrowsmith's highly detailed depiction of Germany made during the Napoleonic Wars The Duke of Cambridge, to whom Arrowsmith dedicated this map, was the 7th son of George III, Adolphus. He had been a student at the university at Göttingen, studied military tactics in Prussia and served as an officer in the Hanoverian Army. Hanover had suffered greatly from invasions from both Prussia and France during the wars, so it was altogether fitting that this superb map was dedicated to him. The map itself is a model of clarity and obviously made for military uses: emphasizing topographical features and roads. It is also handsomely engraved with superlative title calligraphy by J. Rowe. This is a state of the map different from others we have found recorded in that two flaps at the base depicting northern Italy are not… Read More
