Description:
London: C. and J. Adlard for George Catlin, Egyptian Hall, 1844. Hand-coloured lithograph, on thick paper, after Catlin, drawn on stone by McGahey, printed by Day & Hague. A fine image from Catlin's 'North American Indian Portfolio', one of the most important accounts of Native American life. "These beautiful and delicate little animals seem to be endowed, like many other 'gentle and sweet-breathing creatures', with an undue share of curiosity...; and the hunter who wishes to entrap them easily does so without taking the trouble of travelling after them. For this purpose, when he has been discovered by them, he has only to elevate above the tops of the grass, on the point of an arrow or his ramrod stuck in the ground, a little red or yellow flag, the lightness of which will keep it trembling in the wind, to which they are sure to advance, though with great coyness and caution; whilst the hunter lies close, at a little distance to the right or the left, with his rifle or bow in his hand... London: Chatto & Windus, 1875. Hand-coloured lithograph mounted on card within ink-ruled frame. Image size: 11 15/16 x 17 11/16 inches. Card size: 17 5/8 x 21 1/4 inches. A fine image showing a scene of "a beautiful and exciting game" from Catlin's 'North American Indian Portfolio', one of the most important accounts of Indigenous American life. "Amongst the forty-eight tribes which I have visited," Catlin writes, "I find the game of Ball everywhere played; and to my great surprise, by tribes separated by a space of three thousand miles, played very nearly in the same manner; the chief difference consisting in the different construction of the ball-sticks used - the modes of laying out the ground - and painting and ornamenting their bodies. In most of the tribes there are certain similar regulations as to dress, ornaments, &c., which no one is allowed to depart from; and in the three portraits given in the illustration here, these peculiar and general modes are all set forth. Description:
Paris, Coblenz and London, 1842. Aquatint engraving by Salathé after Bodmer, proof on india paper mounted, issue with imprint line, blindstamp. Light spotting. A rare India proof. Bodmer here pictures beavers and their lodge seen on 17 July 1833 whilst the party made their way from Fort Union up the Missouri River to Fort McKenzie. As there was no steamboat traffic beyond Fort Union they traveled aboard the keelboat Flora. The Flora made her way by sail, oar or man-hauling through low waters, swift currents, rain and clouds of mosquitoes during this first part of the journey. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. Description:
[Leipzig: Schmidt and Guenther, 1922. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by L. Weber and Beyer after Bodmer. An evocative image of a frontier trading post. Bodmer, Prince Maximilian and Dreidoppel reached Bellevue, Major Dougherty's Indian Agency on the afternoon of 3 May 1833. Maximilian thought it `quite prettily situated on a hilltop, the churchyard entirely on the summit...Below on the water lie a few huts, on the summit the agency building, the dwellings of a blacksmith and his family, and still more buildings'. Bodmer's sketch pictures this scene: two oxen stand stoically whilst the wagon to which they are hitched is loaded up. One man directs operations, perhaps Mr.Dougherty, whilst others help. An Indian couple, further down the hill, stand discussing events, whilst a small child tugs at the wife's hand. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life.… Read More

Description:
[Paris, Coblenz and London, 1842. Aquatint engraving by Martens after Bodmer, proof on india paper mounted, issue with no imprint and no titles in French or German, blindstamp. Tear to lower blank margin not affecting plate area, mount spotted. A rare India proof of this evocative scene recalling Bodmer's arrival at his gateway to the New World: the American brig Janus, with Bodmer and Prince Maximilian aboard, is here seen at the end of the relatively perilous Atlantic crossing, passing the lighthouse and making its way into Boston harbour. It is the morning of 4th July 1832 and the explorers are greeted by the cry of wheeling sea-birds, perhaps roused by the sound of the cannons being fired in the distance, in celebration of the United States fifty-sixth anniversary of Independence. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Image size: 12 1/8 x 17 9/16 inches. A fine, dynamic image from the First Edition of Catlin's 'North American Indian Portfolio,' one of the most important accounts of Indigenous American life. "Turn about is fair play," according to an old and familiar adage; and this wild and thrilling scene personifies this idea almost literally for the viewer to admit the justness of its application. The...bull often turns upon its assailant, and runs him back, over the whole ground; in which unpleasant reverse he has but to balance himself upon his little horse, praying for smooth ground under its feet, and deliverance from the fury that is behind him. The picturesque and jagged outline of hills only requires the background of a dark, lurid cloud; and if viewed from a distance it will need but little stretch of the imagination to conceive it to… Read More

London: C. "In this plate is illustrated the mode... of the Indians hunting in the depth of the winter, running on their snow-shoes, which support them on the surface of the snow, whilst the great weight of the buffalo and other animals sinks them down and fastens them in the drifts of the snow." [From Catlin's text, North American Indian Portfolio.] Catlin summarized the Native American as "an honest, hospitable, faithful, brave, warlike, cruel, revengeful, relentless, -- yet honourable, contemplative and religious being". In a famous passage from the preface of his North American Indian Portfolio, Catlin describes how the sight of several tribal chiefs in Philadelphia led to his resolution to record their way of life:… Read More

A fine image of the Buffalo Dance, an important practice of the Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains from Catlin's 'North American Indian Portfolio', one of the most important accounts of Indigenous American life. Catlin describes the Buffalo Dance as a practice that is closely allied with the hunting culture of Indigenous peoples and that the dance is deemed indispensable to the success of the hunts. Catlin observes, "Amongst [the Indigenous peoples], the success of their hunts and wars is often attributed to the strict observance of several propitiatory modes of singing and dancing to the Great (or other) Spirit; soliciting his countenance, and promising to give to him, (which they always do,) by sacrificing, the choicest pieces of the animal slain in their hunts. The songs sung on these occasions are exceedingly curious, and… Read More

London: C. & J. Adlard for George Catlin, Egyptian Hall, 1844. Hand-coloured lithograph, on thick paper, after Catlin, drawn on stone by McGahey, printed by Day & Haghe. Very small paper loss to the lower right corner. Image size: 11 7/8 x 17 13/16 inches. A fine, dramatic image from the First Edition of Catlin's 'North American Indian Portfolio,' one of the most important accounts of Indigenous American life. This dramatic scene is compellingly described Catlin's account of his encounter with the bull. While riding with his hunting companions, the artist spotted the group of White Wolves, "the most numerous and formidable" of all the wolf species in the American prairies, surrounding an enormous bull that had been badly attacked. From a distance, Catlin sketched the group, which he had "several times come across such gangs of these animals, surrounding...a wounded bull, where it would seem from appearances that they had been for several days in attendance...In this group some were reclining, to… Read More

A dynamic hunting scene from Catlin's 'North American Indian Portfolio', one of the most important accounts of Indigenous American life. Catlin describes this plate as representing "a number of the accidents of the chase, with all of which the sportsman in that country will soon become acquainted. There is also seen here another variety of the 'rolling' prairie; and the effect of the Indian's deadly weapons forcibly displayed." Catlin, expressing his admiration for the effectiveness of the bow and arrow in the hands of a skilful hunter, writes, "the bow is a far more efficient weapon than the best firearm that could be produced...I know, from experience, that the buffalo will often lead us a long and fruitless chase with two or three ounce bullets through its body, when, if pointed with an Indian's arrow, it would stand and submit… Read More

New York: Currier & Ives, 1858. Lithograph, coloured by hand. Sheet size: 18 1/8 x 23 1/16 inches. A very rare Currier and Ives issue of this classic image of life on the Western Plains before the coming of the white man. Nathaniel Currier & James Ives, the most successful print publishers of their era, published only a few of Catlin's images and all are now particularly rare. Catlin summarized the Native American as "an honest, hospitable, faithful, brave, warlike, cruel, revengeful, relentless, -- yet honourable, contemplative and religious being". In a famous passage from the preface of his North American Indian Portfolio, Catlin describes how the sight of several tribal chiefs in Philadelphia led to his resolution to record their way of life: "the history and customs of such a people, preserved by pictorial illustrations, are themes worthy of the lifetime of one man, and nothing short of the loss of my life shall prevent me from visiting their country and becoming their historian". A fascinating depiction of a collaborative method of hunting from the First Edition of Catlin's 'North American Indian Portfolio,' one of the most important accounts of Indigenous American life. "After the preliminaries of the chase have been gone through... and the hunting party have reached the vicinity of the herd, scenes like the one represented in this illustration often occur. On one occasion I was invited by the Indians to ride out and witness their attack on a herd of buffaloes, near one of their villages on the Upper Missouri, in the summer of 1832: I sat on my horse and witnessed a scene of this kind; a mode of attacking the buffaloes which they call Wa-rahs-took-kee, a surround." Description:
Philadelphia: Edward C. Biddle, 1837. Coloured lithograph. McKenney and Hall's Indian Tribes of North America has long been renowned for its faithful portraits of Native Americans. The portrait plates are based on paintings by the artist Charles Bird King, who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegates visiting Washington D.C., forming the basis of the War Department's Indian Gallery. Most of King's original paintings were subsequently destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian, and their appearance in McKenney and Hall's magnificent work is thus our only record of the likenesses of many of the most prominent Indian leaders of the nineteenth century. Numbered among King's sitters were Sequoyah, Red Jacket, Major Ridge, Cornplanter, and Osceola. After six years as Superintendent of Indian Trade, Thomas McKenney had become concerned for the survival of the Western tribes. He had observed unscrupulous individuals taking advantage of the Native Americans for profit, and his vocal… Read More

Philadelphia: E. C. Biddle, 1836. Hand-coloured lithograph by Lehman & Duval after Charles Bird King's copy of James Otto Lewis' portrait made at the Butte des Morts council in 1827. An early impression and fine image from McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America': `One of the most important [works] ever published on the American Indians' (Field),` a landmark in American culture' (Horan) and an invaluable contemporary record of a vanished way of life. McKenney wrote of this Chippewa warrior, "He is too idle to hunt, and has no name as a warrior; nor is his character good in other respects. He is, however, as expert fisherman and canoeman, in which capacity he is occasionally employed by traders." McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America' has long been renowned for its faithful portraits of Native Americans. Description:
Paris, Coblentz and London, 1842. Aquatint engraving by Himely after Bodmer, proof before all letters. Light soiling to upper and left outer blank margins. A very rare proof before letters. Prince Maximilian and his party left Fort Union on 6 July aboard the 60-foot keelboat Flora and eventually arrived at Fort McKenzie on 9 August 1833. The present view recalls the events of 5th August when the keelboat stopped opposite an Atsina camp at the mouth of the Judith River. The camp contained over 200 tipis and the boat was soon overrun by visitors wishing to trade. The Indians far outnumbered the party of travelers and the situation remained chaotic and tense for a while: Prince Maximilian, in his journal entry for the day noted that `If it was their intention to treat us in a hostile manner, there was no way for us to escape; and how easily might the most trifling dispute with these rude men lead to a breach, by which fifty whites, in the power of eight or nine hundred Indians, would have had no… Read More
