Description:
Crannell, CA: Little River Redwood Company, 1930. Photograph. Fine. Fourteen 5-by-7-inch sepia-tone photographs documenting logging operations in a long-gone company town in the redwood forest north of Eureka, on the California coast. Two of the images show logging camps (Camps 7 and 8); one shows a logging railroad; the rest depict scenes in the forest during the handsaw era. These images are most often seen as postcards notifying buyers that their orders from Little River Redwood Company had been placed on railcars. These larger-format images are quite uncommon. The Little River Redwood Company began operation at Crannell about 1908 and continued until the 1950s. The town was razed in 1969. Logging operations in Crannell shut Two of the views show logging camps (Camps 7 and 8); a third shows a logging railroad. The images do not have a photographer's name; attribution to Dold and Dold based on cataloguing of images from this set hed at Humboldt State University, relying on information from the… Read More

Description:
Tokyo: Kaizosha, 1929. First Edition. Very good. A sequel to Tekisasu mushuku ta sanjuichi pen [Hoboing in Texas and Thirty-one Other Stories] modeled after The Decameron. Hasegawa "spins stories about people's lives in an urban space, although the time and place are no longer the medieval Rome of the Decameron but twentieth-century New York. The main characters are 'Merican-Japs ["meriken jappu"] whose background and reasons for immigration and migration vary, but what is common to them is that they live in a poor, dark neighborhood in Manhattan. Living like hobos, they work as gamblers, acrobats, bootleggers, owners of illegal bars, poets, or assistants to tipsters."-Kyoko Omori, Detecting Japanese Vernacular Modernism, p. 239. These stories are set amongst the immigrants of Third Avenue in New York: "It may be said they happily established a country - a country that exists even if it does not appear on a map of the world... Tokyo: Rodo Shinbunsha, 1901. Trade paperback. Near fine. The third printing (same year as the first) of this very scarce guide to emigration to the United States. "A brief guide to America primarily for students and laborers. The author describes his own 13-year experience in America as a student and laborer from 1884 to 1896. Also reprints short notes from students studying in America. The appendix consists of basic English."-A Buried Past, 117. The appendix presents words in Japanese kanji, with the phonetic pronunciation in English using katakana characters. (NB: This is the same book as Tobei annai, the title listed in A Buried Past. See Tokyo Life, New York Dreams, chapter 6, footnote 56.) This guide was published by the socialist Labor Press and was a publication of Katayama's immigration company, the Association for the America-Bound (Tobei Kyokai). Description:
Tokyo: Showatosho, 1942. First Edition. Trade paperback. Very good. In all likelihood, this is the first published book to describe the internment of the Japanese in the United States following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Taguchi (1905-1956), a Japanese documentary filmmaker and cinematographer, had been in the United States for several years making newsreels for American studios; he was also the head of the US office of the Nippon News Film Corporation. In early December 1941, FBI agents arrested and questioned Taguchi. He was imprisoned on Ellis Island along with other Japanese, German and Italian nationals, all of whom had also been classified as enemy aliens. Taguchi was returned to Japan in 1942 as part of a negotiated prisoner exchange with the Japanese government. He published this blow-by-blow account of the indignities of the process in December 1942. Taguchi's experience at the start of the war was similar to that of many Japanese immigrants in the US. As far as I am aware, no other… Read More

Description:
Columbia, TN: James Mahon, 1880. Viola E. Myers (6 June 1854 to 24 April 1931) was born in Wilcox, Pennsylvania and in the 1870s and 1880s was the best-known bearded woman in the US. In 1883, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch declared Madame Meyers (as she was also known) "the best bearded woman in the business" (February 15). She was married to a sideshow ticket taker, Amos Myers. Myers appears to have worked the sideshow circuit off and on for many years, often doing astrology readings (her profession on US census reports and her death certificate is given as "planet reader"). An extended profile of Myers accompanied by a portrait can be found in the April 1877 issue of the Archives of Dermatology. She was also mentioned in Geoge Henry Fox's The Use of Electricity in the Removal of Superfluous Hair (1886). A pamphlet about her appeared in 1878 with the title: Madame Viola, the Bearded Lady. 2-7/16 by 4-1/8 inches. Original photograph on medium-thickness mount. With spots of handcoloring. Description:
Tokyo: Hakusuisha, 1921. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. A young Japanese adventurer's account of a six-month trip from Seattle, to northern Canada, through Alaska, and back, chasing the aurora borealis in 1919. At the beginning, he claims scientific credentials, only a spirit of adventure and a desire to wander. He wrote the book during the trip and the introduction (dated 1920) is datelined Seattle. The publisher clearly saw this as an adventure tale and advertised other mystery and adventure novels at the back of the book. Illustrated throughout with poor-quality halftone photographs (typical of Japanese books at the time), and a folding map of Tsukamoto's track. This first edition is not in OCLC (or apparently, the National Diet Library in Japan). OCLC does record the second edition, published in 1943, during the Second World War, under the title Arasuka yori aryushan e [From Alaska to the Aleutian Islands]. In 1942, the Japanese Army invaded the Aleutian Islands, and the US Army retook the… Read More

Philadelphia: William Steuart, 1766. First Edition. Good. Bound with (as usual) The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women...To Which Is Added, The Contents of the Second Blast and a Letter...to the People of Edinburgh, Anno 1571 by John Knox. The Oxford Dictionary of National (UK) Biography describes this book as "a dialogue between the author and Thomas Maitland which defended a kind of constitutional monarchy in which bad kings could be legitimately deposed... giving the De jure something of the character of a literary exercise after the manner of Plato. Nevertheless, it provoked contemporary opposition ... and in 1584 it was condemned by act of parliament, though it still had considerable influence on political thought in the seventeenth century." This 18th century edition was published in the American colonies when ideas about resisting the monarchy were just beginning to take hold, and a full decade before the Declaration of Independence.
