It was published to coincide with the Lewis and Clark Exposition. "Comprising an alphabetically arranged list of business firms, private citizens and public institutions; classified list of all trades, professions and pursuits; an alphabetically arranged list of all taxpayers in Linn County; a miscellaneous directory of county and city officers, public and private schools, churches, secret and miscellaneous societies, etc., etc., etc."-title page. 262 pages. The corners are a bit worn, but generally very good or better.

Seattle (Shiatoru): Hokubei nihonjinkai shogyo kaigisho (North American-Japanese Chamber of Commerce), 1932. Third Edition. The third edition, after much shorter versions published in 1928 and 1929. This is a promotional publication printed at a Japanese-language press in Seattle, intended to encourage pan-Pacific trade through the port of Seattle. Chapters are devoted to manufacturing, commercial business, the current state of Seattle trade, trade with Japan, and Seattle's municipal administration, education, and media outlets. Notably, the English introduction from the Seattle mayor makes no mention of the local Japanese community, emphasizing only mutual trade between Seattle and Japan. An artist's book from the author of Geek Love, illustrated exuberantly with original color prints by Mare Blocker. The book was published in an edition of just 125 copies in conjunction with the National Museum of Women in the Arts. The late Katherine Dunn is best known for her circus novel, Geek Love. "This limited edition artist's book was inspired by circus route books, popular in America at the turn of the century. The book chronicles the exploits of an imaginary circus during its spring/summer season. Letterpress printed, illustrated and bound by Mare Blocker, text by Mare Blocker and Katherine Dunn. Illustrations are color linoleum and magnesium cuts representing circus performers, one fold-out color lithograph of performing lions and tigers, and two die-cut pages in the shape of animal heads. West Seattle, WA: F. F. Martin, 1907. Ephemera. Very good. Photograph of Asian and Anglo men apparently involved in fish processing in West Seattle, Washington. The photograph measures 8 by 6-1/4 inches on a larger (9 by 11 inches) dark gray mount with the photographer's ink stamp in the upper left corner, "F. F. Martin | West Seattle, Wash" followed by a date stamp, "Nov 25 1907." The image has good contrast and tonal range. There is a bit of silvering to the lower right corner. The mount has a surface chip at the upper left corner. A nice image, identified by location and date.

Spokane, WA: C. A. Libby, 1910. Ephemera. Very good. An image of two tepees in a forested setting, presumably outside of Spokane, Washington. The tepees are assembled from wooden poles wrapped with a variety of blankets and other large pieces of cloth. This image probably depicts a camp of members of the Spokane tribe. Charles Libby opened a photography studio in Spokane in 1901 (he operated as Libby Art Studio with his sister for a few years before). His son joined the business in the 1920s and ran it until 1969. The Libbys specialized in studio and commercial work; outdoor scenes like this one are somewhat uncommon. Dating is very approximate. Gelatin silver print measuring 6-9/16 by 9 inches on very slightly larger paper. On a gray card mount. Titled and numbered (273) in the negative. Mount corners worn; two small areas of surface loss to the photo paper at the edges. Old ink stamps from a stock photography company on the back (verso).

[Medford, OR]: (Susanne W. Homes), 1920. Ephemera. Fine. A small card promoting the candidacy of one of the first women to successfully run for elected office in Oregon. This piece includes a half-tone photograph of Susanne W. Homes, a candidate for Jackson County school superintendent. Her slogan, printed along the top of the card, was "Equal Opportunities for Every Child." Homes won the primary over A. J. Hanby, a man whose ads, probably not coincidentally, mentioned his gender: "A man with both Norman and University training" and "A school man of wide experience" (Medford Mail Tribune, 19 May 1920). Homes won the primary and squeaked by in the general election, winning her first term by 63 votes. She was handily re-elected. Women won the right to vote in Oregon in 1912, and Homes was one of the first women to successfully run for office in the state. He views the exclusion movement as rooted in racial prejudice, looks for more emigration from Japan, and anticipates that the Pacific Coast will become the meeting ground for the East and West. The statistical data on Japanese agriculture and businesses are derived from the Nichibei Nenkan (Japanese American Yearbook), no. 1, 1905."-A Buried Past, 263. In the late 19th century, Abe attended Hartford Theological Seminary, in Connecticut. In 1905, he took an opportunity to return to America, traveling from Los Angeles to Seattle. Based on his observations and experiences, Abe wrote this philosophical and political overview of the growing Japanese society in California.
