This seaman served on the following vessels out of Seattle, according to the folded (signed) Certificate in the back pocket: Queen, Dorothy Alexander (4 times), Curacao (3), Admiral Farragut, Victoria (2), & Admiral Moser. It gives the dates of service & various capacities. Seven pages of the booklet are fully filled out. Signature of the General Manager on appropriate line on the printed front paste down. Vg. Soiling to covers & also Monssen's printed name at top.

Binding is stable so the book is easy to read & won't fall apart. Scarce.

The classic "read" on the disaster; gripping. Moderate musty odor to this copy; some browning to spine & foxing to endpapers and edges. Still a good copy in almost complete, but pc dj with long crease on front panel & bit of chipping to head/foot of backstrip. In spite of these issues, a copy worth having as a good reading copy.

Last page is a note on this edition with info on the printer, paper, etc. Fine copy. No dj apparently as issued.

A lovely memoir of how the author and his wife came to settle and live on Wallace Island, in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia. Near fine copy with bottom front cover corners very slightly bumped, and in fine dj. Scarce now in first edition in this nice condition with nice dj.

Cloth. 109pp. Short presentation to Jack Cory, once editor of the Rhinelander (Wisconsin) Daily News, signed by Szymczak. This is the author's account, using the pseudonym of Johnny Westcott in the text, of his sailing on the troop transport ship, S. S. Dorchester, in early 1943 as a signalman from the States to Greenland. On February 3. a German U-Boat sunk the Dorchester with a loss of 678 men. Szymczak was a surviver and the last portion of the book is about the sinking and his survival. Although a slight book, it is a powerful autobiographical account that draws the reader almost into the waves of the icy North Atlantic. Although found in a number of libraries, it is a rare book and very seldom found. This copy fine in a very good, unclipped dust jacket. Even the 1976 reprint is very difficult to find.
