Full speckled calf, gilt ruled, spine with 2 gilt lettering-pieces; aeg; by Rivière & Sons. London: John Watts, 1728. Second Edition. The first expanded edition to include the music printed in the text. Gays highly successful ballad opera, satirizing popular Italian opera was an immediate triumph, and ran for a record 62 consecutive performances at the Theatre Royal where it premiered in January 1728. The first edition, printed earlier the same year, had 16 pages of engraved music at the end. Here, the music is printed in the text in woodcut. It features such memorable low-life characters as Polly Peachum, Jemmy Twitcher, Filch and Sukey Tawdry. For some lyrics, Gay borrowed from Allan Ramsays Gentle Shepherd. The music was composed by the German born Johann Christoph Pepusch, a contemporary of George Frederick Handel. It… Read More

SOURCE OF THE TITLE PRIDE AND PREJUDICEBURNEY, FRANCES. Cecilia, or Memoirs of an Heiress. By the Author of Evelina. 12mo. Bound in full speckled calf with gilt-lettered spine labels; page edges dyed yellow. London: Printed for T. Payne and Son. 1782. First Edition. 5 volumes. With the misspelled catchword on page 235 of vol. II and the mispaginated page 159 in vol. V. The first edition of Fanny Burney's second novel, recounting the trials and tribulations of a wealthy young orphan who, launched into society, must guard her fortune and virtue from the depredations of assorted suitors. A follow-up to her hugely successful Evelina, Cecilia is "less unstudied" than the earlier work, "with greater polish, and a 'literary quality' that gave rise to the report that Dr. Johnson had corrected it." (Kunitz & Haycraft)An interesting incidental note is the appearance near the end of the book of a phrase that would gain immortality in the hands of a slightly later author:"'The whole of this unfortunate business,'… Read More

Original ¼-paper-backed gray boards. Printed by William Molineux . Published by William Cobbett. N.D. (1817) First Edition. An English pamphleteer, farmer and journalist, William Cobbett gained a reputation as a rabble rouser, famed for his political publications aimed at working class readers. He believed that reforming Parliament and abolishing the rotten boroughs would help to end the poverty of farm laborers, and he attacked the borough-mongers, sinecurists and "tax-eaters" relentlessly. He was found guilty of treasonous libel on 15 June 1810 after objecting in his Weekly Political Register to the flogging at Ely of local… Read More

With a list of subscribers and a fold-out chart measuring rainfall in England for 1755-66. A fascinating set of contemporary statistics and observations on population patterns, cultural movements, food supply and meteorology in England for three hundred years – well within the life of Shakespeare. Therefore, it gives some implications for society in the time of Shakespeare. It is thought that Malthus may have used some of Short's methodologies; also it is known that Benjamin Franklin read the book. ORIGIN OF THE MYTHMAKING OF THE ENGLISH REFORMATION.16mo. Bound in 20th century full calf; spine with 4 raised bands; red leather label with gilt letters on spine. Imprinted at London by John Tisdale, dwelling in Knight riders Streate. Anno 1560. Second Complete Edition. Two parts in one volume. The definitive edition of Bale's work. 56 leaves (112 pages) longer than the 1551 edition. STC 1274. Bale's Englysh votaryes established the received history of the English church and Reformation, including the notions that the English church was the purest of the early Christian churches, and that the entire history of England could be understood as s battle against the influence of the Roman Catholic Church. Bale's anti-Catholic chronicle, full of salacious accounts of medieval English clergy, had a decisive influence on John Foxe and his Book of Martyrs. Description:
8vo. Original paper boards; paper label on spine. Printed by B. Bensley; Published by the Author; London 1829. "A New Edition." Cobbett had spent his youth in the army, stationed in New Brunswick, where he felt the officers were corrupt and the soldiers underpaid and mistreated. He published The Soldier's Friend in 1792, complaining on these grievances, which caused him to fear reprisal, and so he fled to France. Unfortunately, he arrived at the height of the French Revolution, so his plan to learn French more thoroughly was sidetracked as he continued on to the United States. Once there he found employment teaching English to French exiles, learning their language in the process, resulting in his French Grammar.Board corners and edges are bumped a bit, with some staining; leaves are clean and amply margined; uncut; with the last leaves of quire K unopened, and with some mild foxing and occasional mild toning; o/w Very Nice.

Description:
8vo. ½ calf over marbled boards; spines with five raised bands, 2 black morocco labels, gilt lettered; leaf edges red speckled. London: Published by the Author. 1829. 2 volumes. Although not a Catholic, Cobbett took up the cause of Catholic Emancipation. Between 1824 and 1826, he published his History of the Protestant Reformation, a broadside against the traditional Protestant historical narrative of the British reformation, stressing the lengthy and often bloody persecutions of Catholics in Britain and Ireland. At this time, Catholics were still forbidden to enter certain professions or to become members of Parliament. The law was no longer enforced, but it was still officially a crime to attend mass or build a Catholic church. Although the politician William Wilberforce also worked and spoke against discrimination against Catholics, Cobbett continued a strident and racist opposition to the noted reformer, particularly after Wilberforce published his Appeal in Behalf of the Negro Slaves in the… Read More
