Description:
Very Good. London: Printed by P. Spilsbury and Son, for J. Walker, Paternoster-Row; J. Bell; J. Ladley, Mount-Street, Berkeley-Square; and Mr. Jeffrey, Pall-Mall. M.DCC.XCIV. [1794] Quarter vellum on marbled boards, now scuffed. Quarto, 242 pages, 28 cm. First edition. An early twentieth century owner wrote an interesting entry on the front fly-leaf about the various available editions and the booksellers who had them, i.e., Tregaskis, Dobell, Heffer. A second note explains this owners donations of his various collected works of Pindar to Princeton Universitys Library and to his friend S. H. Monk. The black vernacular of AZID, or the Song of the Captive Negro gives the reader an idea of John Wolcots skills: Poor Mora eye be wet wid tear,/And heart like lead sink down wid woe;/ She seem her mournful friends to hear,/ And see der eye like fountain flow./ No more she give me song so gay,/ But sigh, Adieu, der Domahay. This very good copy was purchased from Heffer in Cambridge, Cat. 222, No. 2377.

Description:
Denis, Charles, Select Fables. By Mr. Charles Denis. London: Printed for J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper, MDCCLIV. [1754] In-8, 21 cm. [frontispiece by C. Grignion; title-page; dedication to the Prince of Wales (ii); preface (xvii); contents (ix); 448 pages]. Rebound in quarter brown calf, five raised bands, gilt-decorated label, on twentieth century marbled boards. Occasional slight spotting.Following in the tradition of LaFontaine, Aesop, and -- if Quintilian is to be believed -- Hesiod, Charles Denis wrote fables that survive the Classical definition: A fable is no more than a moral instruction disguised under the allegory of an action. De La Motte said a fable was an epic poem in miniature, but with more freedom of subject and in the choice of actors. There are 120 fables in Denis's collection, the last was dedicated to His Grace, Thomas, the Archbishop of Canterbury titled "The Phoenix and the Owl." First edition. ESTC Cit. No. T101633.

Description:
Very Good +. Oxford, printed for R. Clements, 1753. In-12, [ii; xii; half-title, verso blank; prologue; pages 13 -108; 2 final blanks]. Brackets drawn on a few lines on pages 55 and 67. Complete. Contemporary calf with gilt decoration, marbled end-papers. The first three books of tooth-lesse satires, attacking institutions, were published in 1597, with reprints in 1598 and 1602, and the last three of byting satires, attacking individuals under pseudonyms which were probably no disguise to Halls contemporaries, in 1598 and 1599. Hall claimed these were the first satires in the English language to have taken Juvenal for a model. They gave much offense, and an attempt was made to have them all burned. The British Library copy of this title has a manuscript note saying the editor of this (1753) edition was William Thompson of Queens College, Oxford. Bookplates of Frances (with coronet and shelf mark) and Stuart Bennett. Ownership signature of Sam. Gillam. Eighteenth century mottled calf, marbled endpapers.
