UK: Oliver & Boyd, 1956. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. h/b 313 pages, rough-cut pages, condition is Very Good. Lectures and Addresses delivered by Sir James Colquhoun Irvine. FOR fifty-seven years Sir James Colquhoun Irvine was connected with the University of St Andrews as student, lecturer, professor of chemistry, and principal. During the 1914-18 War, Irvine's chemistry laboratories there became a kind of research factory, and a contribution to the war-effort was made out of all proportion to their size. As an academic ambassador, Irvine travelled extensively in Europe, India, the West Indies, the United States, and Canada. He was closely connected with the Pilgrim Trust, the Commonwealth Fund, the Carnegie Trust, and many other bodies. His main activities were all of historic importance. The addresses in this volume are the verbal expression of his hopes, his experiences, his points-of-view, and his conclusions concerning those widespread activities. His love for St…

G C L Bertram, 1987. Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. p/b 208 pages, condition is very good, minor edge wear. Signed inscription to the title page. Colin Bertram was born in 1911, schooled at Berkhamsted, entered St John's College, Cambridge, and gained Class I in Zoology. Then, after two summer Arctic Expeditions, he pursued coral reef research in the Red Sea before sailing to Antarctica with the British Graham Land Expedition 1934-37 as biologist in the three-masted schooner Penola. That was the only British Antarctic venture between the Wars, and marked the transition - from the heroic days to modern times. In three summers and two winters' the then supposed Antarctic Archipelago was, by dog sledge journeys on the sea ice, proved to be the Antarctic Peninsula. Returned Cambridge as a Research Student, working on his seal collections, the outbreak of War led into collaboration in the production of a handbook on cold weather equipment for the Army.

Description:
UK: Silvertail, 1988. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 17.5 x 10.7 x 3.3 cm. L.Ron Hubbard published his "Dianetics - the Modern Science of Mental Health" in 1950. Shortly afterwards he founded the Church of Scientology, a religion which could, he claimed, cure 70 per cent of illnesses. Hubbard quickly became a multi-millionaire but his methods, particularly his alleged use of brainwashing, led to investigations in and exile from Britain, Australia and the USA. The history of Hubbard's early years has always been shrouded in mystery, and for the last few years of his life Hubbard was said to have become a Howard Hughes-like recluse.

Description:
Jamala Press, 2003. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. p/b 186 pages, condition is near fine. This is a long awaited biography of a man who became a household name in Australia in 1845. Researched over many years in England, Scotland and Australia the book tells the story of a man who became a legend in his country of forced adoption. As a man he was a deeply divided maze of contradiction and paradoxes, an angel of mercy to some while a mystery to others with his honest questioned. This is the story of his life; his family and the era in which he grew to manhood; his court trials and subsequent banishment from his homeland; his experiences half way across the world in an unknown and feared convict colony. The story is one of crime, passion, wrecked ships, attempted murder, sealers, pirates, aborigines, graft and incredible bravery. His life was one of challenge with unsubstantiated accusations, strife and rumoured misdeeds. It is also a story of cruelty in a chain gang and the rules…

Hambledon and London, 2002. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. h/b 274 pages, condition is very good, some minor edge wear to the DJ. David Livingstone (1813-1873) was one of the supreme representatives of the British Empire. Yet his career suffered many set-backs during his own lifetime and since his death his reputation has swung between extremes of adulation and dismissal. were his epic journeys through Africa purely to save souls and counter the slave trade? Or were they the first steps towards bringing the peoples of central Africa under the control of Europeans who would destroy their values and exploit them economically? Beyond these questions there lies the puzzle of Livingstone's own character and its contradictions.

Description:
UK: The Pentland Press, 1994. Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 5.75 X 8.25. P/B 81 pages, condition is Very Good. This is an extraordinarily lovely story, not a whisper of rancour and it runs at a full gallop throughout. Surprise should not be taken at this equestrian simile for the Reverend William Cowan was at one with horses as with his congregations. Could there be a moral for today; maybe there is, but the internal combustion engine makes a very poor substitute to Roderick his favourite horse and indeed any other of the remarkable animals on which he rode or was drawn over two thirds of Scotland and so much of England. When he wrote that the man that can habitually ride well with hounds must have brains and no mistake, he just spoke from his heart. The aptness of phrase used to describe those whom he met brings life itself to their names and what anecdotes there are from the Heights of the Alma to a garret in a Glasgow close: the description of Lord Raglan at one and a randy tart at the other…
