Collected by Henry Bull in 1566, these Anglican prayers and meditations were reprinted for the Parker Society in 1842.

Charles James Lever (1806Ð1872) was an Irish novelist and raconteur, whose novels, according to Anthony Trollope, were just like his conversation. This, is the first edition of his 1st novel. Lorrequer was merely a string of Irish and other stories good, bad and indifferent, but mostly rollicking, and Lever, who strung together his anecdotes late at night after the serious business of the day was done, was astonished at its success. It began as a literary and political review.

Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847) was a Scottish minister, considered to be the greatest Scottish churchman of his age. He wrote on many different areas of theology, politics and economics.

John Pearson (1613-1686) was an English clergyman in the seventeenth century, regarded as one of the most erudite theologians of the era, becoming Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity at Cambridge as well as Master of Jesus College and then Trinity College, before becoming Bishop of Chester. His Exposition of the Creed is highly regarded as a work of English dogmatic theology.

Jean-Henri Merle d'AubignŽ (1794-1872) was a Swiss protestant minister who became a renowned church historian. His Reformation history became an instant classic and was translated into many languages soon after its publication. This combined edition is scarce.

London: T. Cadell, 1789. hardback. Vols I & II only of what was published originally in eight volumes. Good, full leather-binding showing bumping and scuffmarks, gilt and red panelled spine decoration and titling; text block firm and unmarked, pages crisp, but some tearing in front endpapers of Vol I (including title page mostly missing).. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). Hume set out at first only to write a history of England under the Stuart monarchs James I and Charles I, which appeared in 1754. He followed this with a second history that continued to the Revolution of 1688. With the relative success of these two volumes, Hume researched the history of earlier eras and produced a total of six volumes. As a result, the fifth volume was the first to appear in print, in 1754, while the first two volumes were published last, in 1762.

Text block firm, pages crisp and unmarked, in remarkable condition for its age, some foxing and occasional watermarks. Provenance: from library of Sir Christopher Ondaatje, FRSL.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). Biography of King William IV and his Queen Adelaide, published in 1831, the year of his coronation. He would of course die in 1837, succeeded by his niece, the young Victoria.

Good, no d/j, marbled boards, half-calf with gilt spine titling (illegible with much rubbing and front of spine half split); front guttering weak but text block firm; pages crisp and unmarked, with minimal foxing primarily on endpapers.. 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). Izaak Walton is best known today for The compleat Angler (first published in 1653). He was celebrated in his lifetime for his biographies, however, with the first on John Donne published in 1640 and Bishop Sanderson in 1678 (5 years before his death). Three at least of them were anglers (Donne, Wotton and Herbert) and all were known for their gentleness and piety.
