When did you get started in bookselling?
Came up with the idea of a greeting card for book-lovers in 1999 and published the first edition of twelve card styles in 2000. Trademarked the name In My Book, found a marvelous artist to collaborate with (Meredith Hamilton) and began by selling the cards (which perforate to become bookmarks) to independent bookstores later that year.
What drew you to bookselling?
I worked in publishing with a small but wonderful children's book company called Kane/Miller Book Publishers, whose specialty was American editions of foreign children's picture books. There I learned the basics, which in addition to my love of print books, primarily fiction, biography and drama encouraged me to come up with the In My Book line. I took a chance on becoming an entrepreneur to create a never-before type of greeting card that book-lovers would want to give as gifts to fellow book-lovers. What goes better with a gift book than a greeting card that turns into a bookmark?
