Description:
Lincoln (Nebraska): University of Nebraska Press, 1986     ¶ An interesting reference to Wright's famous lipogram Gadsby, showing the deterioration of Wright's text as it is copied and recopied by writers who don't have access to the first edition (1939) -- which was, and is, almost unobtainable. On page 53 here, Motte quotes Queneau 1964 quoting Pierce 1961 quoting Wright 1939: Pierce had it right ("carolling", "No"), but now Motte has it wrong ("caroling", "no"). The conclusion seems obvious enough, that there is no substitute for the first edition.   ||| Collation: 228 x 151 mm: 112 leaves, paginated [i-vii] viii-xiii [xiv], 1-209 [210 blank].  Illustration: Diagrams, tables.  Binding: Pictorial wrappers.  Condition: Very good.  .

Description:
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1961   ¶ "FIRST EDITION" of this influential survey; including remarks on Burmann, Wright, and the Spanish lipogrammatists, with a paragraph from Gadsby (1939) on page 48. The latter, we note, was already such a rare book that Pierce was obliged to quote from it at second hand, never having seen a copy himself. (We also note that Pierce's secondhand quotation is more accurate than the second edition of Gadsby 2004, which -- for example -- 'corrects' Wright's spelling "carolling" in chapter 1.)  (Series: Harper modern science series; edited by James R. Newman.)   ||| Collation: In 16s (209 x 140 mm): 160 leaves, paginated [i-vi] vii-xi [xii], 1-305 [306-308].  Illustration: Diagrams, tables.  Binding: Publisher's red cloth lettered in gilt, publisher's device in blind, plain wove endpapers, yellow-and-red headbands, all edges trimmed and plain. Oyster Bay (New York): Feral Books, 2001   ¶ ONLY EDITION of a charming anthology gathered together as a medium for "The remarkable collage images of John Digby[, which] are rich in associations that demonstrate man's ancient links with the sea. Using archival and library sources, he has found and utilized colorful antique illustrations from nineteenth century and earlier publications that show humans of diverse cultures in their many ocean-going pursuits. As a basis, he uses outlines of fish that contain within them and sprouting from them miniature ships, sloops, smaller craft, and shipwrecks." (Dudley, page [278].) The text consists of 101 poems and prose extracts arrayed in seventeen "keepsakes" or fascicles (parts) each illustrated by two or more "collages" or vignettes by Digby, together with three additional fascicles, viz: [18] Water voyages: A note on the keepsakes [by] Joan Digby, [19] The maritime collages of John Digby [by]… Read More
