Edinburgh: Printed [by Grant and Moir] for T. Brown..., 1793. 12mo (in 6s), 175 x 94 mms., pp. [iv], 281 [282 blank], including half-title, engraved portrait of Mary Queen of Scots as frontispiece, contemporary sheepskin, black leather label; front joint slightly wormed and cracked at top and base, top of spine chipped, corners a bit worn, but a good to very good copy. This appears to be a different work from one with the same title published by Kearsley in London in 1791, though both that volume and the present end with the accession of James I to the English throne. ESTC T163469 locates copies in BL, Glasgow, NLS (2); Library Company of Philadelphia, McMaster. A work with the same title was published by Kearsley in London in 1791, in two apparently different issues: ESTC T63355, with register vii,[1],309,[1]p; and T92232, with register viii,304p. Neither issue seems to have a portrait and was advertised for sale at three shillings, while the Edinburgh imprint was three shillings and six pence.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo (in 4s), 205 x 128 mms., pp. 370, original boards, uncut; boards a bit knocked about and soiled, spine defective, an unprepossessing copy of a book as issued. Sharp (1735 - 1813) published over sixty works in his lifetime, though he is often remembered today for his association with Wilberforce in the attempt to abolish the slave trade. In this work, he argues rather presciently for universal enfranchisement.

FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION. 8vo, pp. [iv], 424 [425 - 456 Index], including half-title, title-page in red and black, contemporary calf; ex-library, with bookplate and library pocket, library shelf-mark on spine and on verso of title-page, fragment of label on spine, joints cracked (but firm), spine dried. The Latin edition of this work appeared in 1727, and a different English translation was published in 1728.

London: John Murray..., 1824. 2 volumes. 8vo, pp. xxxvii [xxxviii blank, xxxix drop-title, xl blank], 407 [408 blank]; [ii], 511 [512 blank], contemporary polished calf, gilt spines, marbled edges and end-papers; spines slightly worn, but a very good set. From the Easton Neston Library, with library label for shelf mark and the armorial bookplate of Sir Thomas Hesketh, Bart., Rufford Hall Lancashire on the front paste-down end-paper. Geoffrey Carnall in his book Robert Southey and his Age (1960) notes that this attempt to write the lives of the "heroes of our religion" produced an account that "was infected with heresy. In the course of the book he fell foul of several of the Thirty-Nine Articles. He sympathized with Pelagius, an d indirectly attacked St. Paul's teaching on faith. He seemed to think that Romanism would be an excellent religion if it were stripped of its ecclesiastical abuses, and if the popes were men like Fenelon."

"A vigorous account of the notorious conspiracy of Catiline in 63 B.C. to overthrow the civil power in Rome, Sallust's Catiline is one of the best histories in Latin literature. The narrative is vivid and consistent, and the sketches of character are admirable in their power and conciseness. Although the author obviously hated the democratic party with which Catiline was connected, and had no great admiration for Cato or Cicero, his work is wonderfully impartial. The scholar and historian Pandolfo Collenuccio (1444 - 1504) graduated from Padua University in 1465 with a degree in law and and held various political offices; he is credited with obtaining the Lordship of Pesaro Giovanni Sforza , illegitimate son of Costanzo I. In Venetia Aperesso Gabriel Gigleo de AFerrrari, 1572. Small 4to, 195 x 142 mms., pp. [xvi], 231 [232 register], with separate title-page for La Creatione del Mondo, pp. [56], with printer's device on title-page, other woodcut illustrations, historiated initials, Dutch paste-down end-papers, contemporary vellum with ink title on spine; binding a trifle soiled, but a very good copy. OCLC notes that this work is a "Classical statement of the history of the world, arranged by its ages. This sort of work was of great importance in the developing philosophy of history and systems of the calculation of time in the last half of the century. The Creatione del mondo is one of a large number of treatises that comprise Philo's compendious commentary on the Book of Genesis. Writing to Kames in June, 1747, David Hume said of this work that he had read the essays "with great Satisfaction, the Reasonings are solid, the Conjectures ingenious, & the whole is instructive. Tommaso Aniello (1620-1647), the Italian fisherman who played a leading role in the revolt against Spanish rule in Naples in 1647, later early 18th century panelled sheepskin; fore-edges very closely trimmed, title-page soiled, binding a little worn, with the top of the spine chipped, corners worn. A fair to good copy, with the early, neat ownership inscription of "John Edwards" in the upper half of title-page, and his autograph repeated upside-down on the verso of the last leaf. A very good set, with the words "Philosopher & Infidel" in a contemporary hand bracketing Gibbon's name on the title-page. This abridgement of Gibbon's six massive quartos has been variously attributed to the Aberdonian schoolmaster and educational writer John Adams (1750 - 1814) in the BL catalogue and in the Oxford DNB; and to the Reverend Charles Hereford by other commentators.
