Calcutta: The Survey Of India, 1924. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Good/No Jacket Issued. Original printed wrappers with red cloth spine. This is the catalogue updated and corrected to July 1924 as printed, but hand updated/corrected in fine red pen to 11 December 1925. The book is large format measuring 332mm tall x 250mm. It has 61 pages and many index maps including two folding ones. One index map shows Mt Everest, Makalu and Gauri Sankar with printed elevations 29002 feet, 27790 feet, and 23440 feet respectively. The covers have edge tears with one on the front being 5cm long. The book has been updated by hand in red pen mainly in the textual specification section at the rear. I did not seen any corrections on map images. These updates were almost certainly done by the publisher prior to selling this item. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL ITEM BEING OFFERED.

New York: E. P. Dutton and Company, 1905. First Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 1905 FIRST PRINTING of First USA Edition. Original dark navy cloth, gilt lettering cover & spine, gilt on top edge of text block, bottom & fore-edge of text block untrimmed as issued. Much better than average condition example of this important, scarce book. This example is from the collection of Prof. Larry Swan who was himself an explorer/pioneer climber in the Himalaya. Swan was a member of the 1954 USA expedition that attempted to climb Makalu. A biologist and polymath, he contributed several scientific papers to the study of Himalayan natural history. The book has clean covers with normal slight darkening to spine, Swan's name and address are penned on the corner of the FFEP and a penned title in Swan's hand is on the blank verso of the folding rear map titling it "Central Tian Shan Merzbacher" -- otherwise, there are no previous owner's names/marks or writing on… Read More

Original dark navy cloth, gilt lettering cover & spine, gilt on top edge of text block, bottom & fore-edge of text block untrimmed as issued. The book has minor soiling to covers with usual slight darkening to spine, a horizontal crease mark from EP through page 8 (obviously a production error where the first gathering was creased before being bound into the book), no foxing, cracked paper inside front hinge (but hinge is strong and holding well), overall solid binding, folding map at rear has tear near stub that has cello tape stain (tape long gone). Generally a decent example EXCEPT there is underlining in red ink on several pages (usually just a word or two, but several full lines near the end -- see photos for heaviest underlined pages).
