No date to this copy, probably 1860. John Abercrombie (1726–1806) was a Scottish horticulturist important to renovating garden techniques. As a young man Abercrombie was employed at the Royal Gardens at Kew, and at Leicester House; and later set up a successful market gardening business in Hackney and later at Tottenham. UK: James Foster Wadmore, 1880. (UK) No date given, possibly around 1880?, bookplate of James Foster Wadmore who I believe was born in 1822 and lived until 1903. He was associated with the Association of the Royal Institute of British Architects and wrote several books on the buildings and archaeology of the Tonbridge area. I believe these wartercolours are his work as his initials are found on two of them. The back cover is missing, wear to corners of cover, with is spotted with faint staining, the spine is quite worn, 14.5 x 12.5 inches, three-quarter dark leather with grey covers, 26 think carboard leaves, each with one or two original watercolours of buildings and scens from the Tonbridge area in Kent. The watercolours are unsigned and most that have lost their tissue gaurds have darkened. Beath is identified as a farmer in Glenvale of Kinross-shire and this thin book was privately printed for local circulation. It is a collection of some 30 songs and laments wedded to "some familiar and suitable ilt. The editor's note is dated 24th December 1883. "When John and me were married our haddin was fu' braw,/ My mither gae's a hundr pound, my father gied me twa,/ I dealt my notes baith left and richt when e'er I gaed to Toun,/ And weel I wat our bridal bed was gude swan doun." etc. Uncommon. This book with its wonderful illustration is evocative of their lives there, living day to day with the land and the hard wrok of farm chores.
