Interview with Gloria Tiller of Kazoo Books LLC

When did you get started in bookselling?
A short history: I started a little used book shop in 1988. My husband put us online in 1997 giving us a new name and getting us into the antiquarian, collectible titles. We moved into selling and ordering new books in 2003 with a big expansion into another location. Now, we sell more new books than used, but I love working with the collectible and signed titles.
What drew you to bookselling?
I always wanted to have a brick and mortar business. And books have always been around even if this business constantly evolves, there will always be bookstores.
Did you have any mentors in becoming a bookseller?
Yes, I had a gentleman who would come in on Tuesdays and show me how to tell a first edition, first state or book club edition. I would save titles that came into the store and he would help me. It was the beginning of a long and continuing education in the business of books.
What are your specialties as a dealer?
Not only me, but our staff is very good at finding titles for people, even if they come into our store and can't remember the title or the author's name. I tell them it's magic.
What's the most amazing book you've ever sold?
We had a copy of Hemingway's limited Signed Edition of Farewell to Arms. It was the Holy Grail of book collecting. My husband traded it for 4 boxes of signed first editions of various authors. A good trade, but I was crushed to lose my Hemingway.
What is your favorite part of being a bookseller?
Meeting people who love books and reading.
Do you have an open storefront or have you in the past?
Love our brick and mortar. It's been a wonderful window into the world of books.
If so, do/did you have any bookstore pets?
Of course. We had Tinker for 20 years. He was a big old Maine Coon who was so lovable he had his own fan club. Now we have Radio, a large Norwegian Forest Cat. Not quite the personality of Tinker, but very customer friendly.
What is the funniest / strangest / scariest thing that ever happened in your store?
This isn't a funny story, but really cool. We had a couple who met in the store. When it came time for him to propose he brought in a little book of poetry and set it in that section, then brought in his girlfriend so she could find the book. His proposal was in it. They did wedding pictures at the store too.
What is your favorite bookshop (other than your own)?
Cottage Books in the upper part of Michigan in Glen Arbor. Quaint and cozy with great Michigan titles.
What do you personally like to read? Collect?
I love my suspense mysteries. I read Brian Freeman, Joseph Heywood and love the Soho Press authors.
What's your favorite book you personally own? Would you sell it, if the price were right?
I collect Ralph Steadman titles and illustrations. I have a lot of his signed books.
What one book would you buy if price were no object?
I would get my Hemingway back.
If you were stranded on a desert island and could bring three books, what would they be?
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand On the Road by Jack Kerouac The Book of Awakening by Mark Nepo
