Description:
Mostly Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, Michigan, 1940. Good. 7¼" x 11". Riveted faux leather over flexible card. 20 leaves with 64 black and white photographs. Around half are inserted in corner mounts, the other half adhered (all but one rectos only), and nine are laid in. Photos measure from 2¾" x 3¾" to 3 1/8" x 4¾". Album good with heavy wear loss of some surface covering as well as complete separation of the covering of the front cover, which is entirely lacking from the rear; photos generally near fine or better. This is an album that was almost certainly created by an employee of Carl F. Skinner & Sons, a Kalamazoo, Michigan distributor of the Power House Candy Bar. Power House was popular for several decades and was manufactured at the time by the Walter H. Johnson Candy Company out of Chicago, and was later part of Peter Paul. All the photos relate to Power House and its distribution. Approximately 37 photos show painted store windows with Power House advertising, including many different… Read More

Description:
Texas, 1951. Very good +. 33 photographs and 12 pieces of ephemera. 24 photos measure 5¾" x 3½", the rest are 6¼" x 10¼". Items generally very good plus or better with evidence of scrapbook removal on many versos. This is a small collection of photographs and ephemera documenting a promotion for a Texas-based drugstore, Skillern's Departmental Drug Stores. The item promoted was Schick razor blades and contestants competed for trips to exotic locales like Rio De Janeiro or Havana by submitting entries which finished this sentence in 25 words or less, "I buy Eversharp Schick Products from Skillern's because . . ." The photos are spectacular and, with one exception, are entirely devoted to internal shots of store displays for the contest. Each image is filled with razors and promotional signs. One of those signs is included here as part of the ephemera. Because the promotional displays were placed all over the stores we see other store sections within, including canned goods, produce,… Read More

Description:
Kelly Air Force Base, Texas: Base Photographic Laboratory, 1955. Very good +. Six black and white 8" x 10" photographs. Generally very good plus: a bit curled with light edge wear and scattered spotting. This is a group of fantastic photographs showing internal views of the general store at the Kelly Air Force Base (KAFB) near San Antonio, Texas. The site for KAFB was chosen in 1916 and the base opened one year later, its quick growth spurred by the United States entry into World War I. The base was known for the "Kelly Katies," the name given to the over 10,000 women who worked there and helped make it the world's largest air depot by the end of World War II. At KAFB's closing in 2001, it was the oldest continuously operating flying base in the United States Air Force. These photographs reveal internal shots of KAFB's general store. There are great images of the grocery aisles, teeming with canned and fresh fruits and vegetables, shelves of dry goods, price lists for sodas and baby foods, and… Read More

Tampa, Florida: The Tampa Daily Times, 1924. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to 11" - 13" tall; 11 5/8" x 8 1/2". String tied faux black leater over thick boards, titles stamped in black, Seal of the State of Florida in gold on front cover. 201 pages. A fantastic marketing piece for South Florida, meant to be distributed throughout the country to entice business and families to emigrate. The book had three stated goals: to prove to grain and stock farmers of the Corn and Wheat belts that Florida was a more profitable place to produce; that it's a wonderful place to live; to promote the movers and shakers of the area. Dozens of photos accompany a detailed portrayal of the present economic circumstances, a history of Tampa, writeups on Kissimmee, Lakeland, Tarpon Springs, Winter Haven and more. There are also a couple dozen biographies of prominent folks including the Ringling Brothers, John and Charles. A comprehensive look at South Florida commerce in the years before the Depression.
