Description:
Genova: Stamperia Casamara, Piazza 5 Lampadi, 1918. Very good +. 4 " x 3". Stapled printed thin card wrappers. Pp. 40. Very good plus: dust soiling and mild wear throughout; a few minor ink blurs and creases on leaves not affecting readability. This is an Italian-language almanac with specially issued wrappers for distribution in California. It was sponsored by the Banca Popolare "Fugazi", with locations in San Francisco, Oakland, and Santa Barbara, California and was likely distributed as a promotion to Italian communities in California. Giovanni (John) F. Fugazi (1838-1916) was born in Milan, Italy and emigrated to the United States the age of 16. He spent the next several years as an itinerant laborer before settling in San Francisco in 1869. There he founded San Francisco's first travel agency, Agenzia Fugazi. Before Fugazi's travel agency, Italian immigrants in San Francisco had no way of sending money back to their families. He owned the only vault in North Beach and many Italians asked… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1908. Very good. 15 3/8" x 41¾". Printed on a coated, waxlike paper. Very good : a couple of tiny separations at intersections, small closed tear at another, 2" vertical separation at far upper left, a couple of small edge chips, some scattered pinpoints of soiling. A scarce map of San Francisco's waterfront, its southernmost edge shows a portion of Yuba Street and the far Northwest is a portion of Lewis Street. It also denotes the square footage of 27 labeled seawall lots. The map may have been created to assist its maker in evaluating a number of plans for building up the waterfront, as an application the Embarcadero waterfront entered into the National Register of Historic Places shows his regular involvement in those plans from 1908 onward. We locate only a digital copy at Berkeley.

Description:
Oakland, California: Oakland Unified School District, 1968. Very good -. 11" x 8½". Stapled printed thin card wrappers. Pp. V, 25; an additional two separate unrelated leaves laid in described below. Very good minus: last leaf fully detached and possibly lacking a rear wrapper; light dust-soiling and toning; a few penciled notations to one page. This is a rare publication detailing the history of Chinese Americans in California as well as the greater United States. In 1968, at the request of Mayor Joseph Alioto, a San Francisco Chinese Community Citizens' Survey and Fact-Finding Committee was formed. Its goal was to help "provide the many missing parts of the history of a very small minority group that played such a big part in the development of the western part of this country." This publication marks a section of that committee's work, and, according to its preface, it was likely part of a larger work, a "Multi-Ethnic Calendar" published by the Oakland Unified School District. That calendar was… Read More

Very good: covers lightly scuffed, soiled and creased; tiny tear and offsetting to ffep; two pages moderately spotted and two with a tiny closed tear; a bit of creasing at margins; lightly toned. Description:
San Francisco, California: [San Francisco Community Chorus], 1929. Very good. 11" x 8". Bifolium, printed all four sides. Pp. [4]. Very good: edges lightly worn and soiled; tiny corner crease; lightly spotted. This is an illustrated program for a benefit performance by "200 Ne*roes" which took place at the Dreamland Auditorium in San Francisco in July 1929. The performance was staged as a competition between the Oakland Community Chorus and the San Francisco Community Chorus to decide who would represent San Francisco at a statewide chorus contest in Hollywood a few weeks later. The program boasted that audiences would be regaled with classic African American ballads, spirituals and "Plantation Melodies . . . As None Other Can Sing Them," and urged potential attendees to "Hear Them - 'You'll Be Surprised.'" The concert also featured African American singers Naomi McCulloughPharr and George Jones, reprising their performances from the 1929 film Hearts in Dixie. Per the film's entry on the… Read More

Description:
San Francisco: Carl E. Jordan, 1972. Newsprint. pp. 15. Very good with light toning to outermost leavs and a tiny tear to the cover page. This is an issue of the short-lived San Francisco Forum which touted itself as "The Independent Community Newspaper" for San Francisco. Its premier issue contained a short history of how the paper came about, as well as its purpose: "the idea of the FORUM was born amid reports of long continuing strife rampant within the bowels of other publications. In addition to the searing dissention [sic] within the management of our community newspapers there exists the counter-productive and egocentric mismanagement of the major social organizations within our community. As a result the public has been exposed to . . . biased reporting and the effective silencing of the distasteful truths. For any paper to publish but one side of any issue is equal to the total censorship of the other." The paper provided information relevant to the gay community, with regular… Read More

Description:
Fresno, CA: N.P., 1951. Good. 7¼" x 5". Stapled thin card wrappers. Pp. [26], 59. Good: wrappers heavily soiled and with a ballpoint scribble; moderate staining and dust soiling throughout with a few dogears and penciled owner notations. This is a book of prayers, printed in Armenian and English, written by a leader of the Armenian church and community in Fresno, California. It was published to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the birth of St. Gregory of Narek who was an Armenian poet, monk, and theologian and is venerated as a saint in the Armenian Apostolic and Catholic Churches. Fresno, California, has historically been home to a significant population of Armenian Americans. The similar climate of the region was a large draw for Armenian immigrants, many of whom made their living in agriculture. Several sources agree that the influx began with an Armenian merchant, Hagop (known as Jacob) Seropian, who had first settled in Massachusetts but found the winters unagreeable. In 1881, Seropian… Read More

Description:
Los Angeles, California: Los Angeles Times, 1980. Very good. Three posters, each measuring 18" x 23". Very good: one tiny tear to edge of one map, light foxing in the margin of another; else minimal wear and light creasing to edges. This is a set of three pictorial maps commissioned for the Los Angeles Bicentennial celebration and originally printed in the Los Angeles Times' Home magazine in 1980. They depict 300 years of Los Angeles area history, though the final hundred had yet to occur. The artist, Cathy Pavia, is a longtime art instructor and freelance illustrator for advertising and magazines. She also created the art for several books, including the Cathy and Company children's book series and Joey Green's The Zen of Oz: Ten Spiritual Lessons from Over the Rainbow. Each map has a key with between 22 and 38 highlighted areas, with text corresponding to each number along the bottom. The map entitled "The first hundred years, 1781-1881" stretches from Shoo Fly Pier, Santa Monica in the west to… Read More
