Rydal, Pennsylvania/Wildwood, New Jersey: The Ogontz School/Wilson G. Kent Co, 1928. Very good. 9¼" x 6¼". Limited to 44 copies, this being number 3. Decoratively embossed leather over thick boards with purple silk moire pastedowns, aeg. pp. 259, [15, blanks] + 56 tipped in silver gelatin photographs measuring 6" x 4". Very good: board edges heavily worn with areas of loss; lacks clasp; internally very good plus or better with hints of toning at extremities and near fine or better photographs with one loose. This is an elaborate yearbook for an elite private girl's school prepared for its honorary class member, the important poet-activist, Angela Morgan. The Ogontz School for Young Ladies began in Philadelphia in 1850 as the Chestnut Female Seminary. In 1883 it moved to Elkins Park and the Ogontz estate, which precipitated the name change. By the time of this yearbook, the school was owned by Abby Sutherland who moved the school to Abington Township, built a new campus, and separated the older… Read More

Description:
South Bend, Indiana, 1938. Full limp leather bound with rivets. 32 pages with 76 black and white photographs hing mounted, several to a page, vertically overlapping. Most photos measure 2¾" x 4 ½" and most are captioned in small typescripts that are scotch taped to the pages. Album very good with moderate wear and scuffing; internally near fine or better. A working realtor's album highlighting his listings in Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. His highlights may not have been entirely accurate as we note that a commercial realtor named Rufus W. Smith in South Bend, Indiana was found in 1933 to be engaged in the sale of real estate without a license while participating in a fraudulent land deal. One listing is for a huge mixed use building that contained 22 apartments, 12 stores and four offices. The photographs for this and another commercial building provide fantastic street level views with lots of business signage. The book also has several listings for farms, including one with 304 acres and a… Read More

Description:
Mostly Watkins, New York, 1900. Very good +. 17 mounted black and white photographs. All but two measure approximately 5½" x 3¾" on larger card mounts. Two are captioned verso. Generally very good plus or better. This is a collection of Upstate New York cabinet cards depicting African Americans. 15 have photographer imprints with twelve of them being from Watkins, New York; the others are Waverly, Elmira and Auburn. The captions don't provide very much information as they lack last names. Still, a lovely collection of late 19th century African American photography.

Description:
New Mexico, Arizona and Oklahoma, 1959. Very good. 102 color slide transparencies measuring 1 3/8" x 7/8", in cardboard mounts measuring 2" x 2"; all extensively captioned in typescript on labels adhered to mounts. Mounts generally very good plus or better with fine transparencies. This is a captivating collection of well composed and captioned slides by an unknown photographer as he and his wife and young son traveled with a member of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Neal Jensen, visiting Native Americans in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona in the late 1950s. While we have not identified the photographer, Neal Jensen was a relocation officer at the United Pueblos Agency which was located in Albuquerque. The photographer, who was apparently Jensen's friend, managed to document the lives, activities and living conditions of at least eight different tribes in at least 14 different locations. Each mount has a later applied sticker with two to four lines of typescript recording the location, month,… Read More

Photo very good plus with several light soil spots; mount very good with heavy corner wear. A crisp image of the Woodson Hotel in Yates Center, Kansas, probably taken before the turn of the century. The photo shows a number of men, probably laborers and their bosses, during a break in the digging of a ditch and laying of pipe. A family in a horse-drawn carriage can be seen in the background, as well as a sign for Tom Keene cigars. The hotel was built in 1887 of Yates Center sandstone blocks and is now a luxury apartment building. This item is offered by Langdon Manor Books, LLC, antiquarian booksellers. Description:
Generally Michigan, 1910. Very good. Includes 210 card-mounted photos and 14 tin types; most are loose; 71 are CDV or smaller, 139 are cabinet cards or larger-approximately three quarters of the subjects are identified with names. Also included are four manuscript books and some ephemera. Generally very good: light to moderate wear; albums and manuscripts with faint odor. This is a collection of photographs, with some manuscripts and ephemera, documenting descendants of Lorenzo Mudge, who, along with his first wife Emeline was the first to settle in Castleton, Michigan. The collection was probably compiled by Lorenzo's daughter, Mina or one of Mina's children. It also includes photographs of Mina's extended family after she married William L. Holmes, a preacher, in 1890. Mina, William and two of their young children are seen in the photo at right and there are at least three portraits of Mina in the collection. Per an included proof sheet with a biography of Lorenzo Mudge from History of Allegan… Read More

Photos range from 2" x 3" to 8" x 10" and around one third are captioned. Album good: lacking covers and several leaves are loose; photos generally very good plus or better. The album covers Norris' life from high school through early adulthood, though there are a handful of photos from an earlier period likely showing his family around their home. High school photos include an entire page devoted to a basketball tournament in 1945 and there are two 8x10 team photos and two smaller group shots, showing that Elmus was one of two Black players on the team. He also played football for Murphysboro and a small team shot showed he was… Read More

Los Angeles, California, 1923. Very good. 7¼" x 11¼". String tied cloth over flexible card. 62 pages with 94 black and white photographs adhesive mounted. Most photos measure between 2¾" x 4½" to 5½" x 3¼" with six 5" x 7" or larger; most are captioned. Album very good plus with minor imperfections, photos near fine or better. This album is filled with stunning images of two disparate genres of performance art: live theater and window displays—and the window displays are devoted exclusively to the Fowler Brothers book store, then located at 747 South Broadway in Los Angeles. While not denoted as such, the colleague who sold the album to us says it was acquired with a scrapbook that was compiled by the actor shown here: a Richard H. Sloan who appeared in many Los Angeles plays from 1920-1926 and was stage manager of the Literary Theatre of Los Angeles. We're told that the scrapbook showed that Sloan also created dioramas as well as designed and built sets for some performances. The first… Read More

N.P., 1943. Near fine. 7" x 11¾". Flexible faux leather post-bound album. 98 pages, the first 38 with 109 adhesive mounted photographs and rest of the pages are blank. Photos measure 3" x 4" and approximately three quarters are captioned. Album and contents near fine or better, a few photos a bit loose from adhesive. This is a photo album containing 109 images from 31 well-known movies of the 1930s and early 1940s. Each photo was taken from the screen while the photographer was viewing the film inside a theater. About three-quarters of the images have handwritten captions, mostly the year of the film or the name of the actor(s) seen in the shot, though a few have a brief synopsis of the scene. We see Ronald Reagan and Errol Flynn in Santa Fe Trail, and several photographs show scenes from the 1935 film Mutiny On The Bounty. There are a few shots from The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Dr. Kildare's Strange Case. Several of the films starred Wallace Beery; we see him with Lionel Barrymore and… Read More

Nashville, Tennessee: Geo. H. Anderson, 1923. Good. Three black and white photographs, each measuring 8" x 10" on card mounts measuring 11 ½" x 13 ½". Photos very good with a few minor surface abrasions and one small stain in the background of one photo; mounts good with moderate wear, chipping and a bit wavy. This is a group of three spectacular photographs by a prolific Black photographer in Nashville which showcases Meharry Medical College's [MMC] pharmacy school graduating class of 1923, as well as the members of its Phi Beta Sigma chapter. MMC was the first medical school for African Americans in the South when it was founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College. The school was chartered separately in 1915 and in the early 21st century became the largest HBCU devoted solely to educating scientists and healthcare professionals. The 1923 graduating class was Meharry's largest to that point with 198 degrees conferred and 20 of them going to women. While we cannot… Read More
