Edinburgh: Waugh and Innes. Good. 1823. Third Edition. Hardcover. 155 pp. In what appears to be original full calf leather with gilt ruling, 5 raised bands to spine with dark red morocco label. Some rubbing and wear to binding, a 1" cut across the top of the board, some rubbing at the joints and a bit of loss at top and bottom spine. Interior has inscript of "E.W. Thurston" and the ghost of an heraldic label, half title has Rev. W. Wilson 1824 (there was a W. Wilson, preacher in Edinburgh at that time but we don't know if they are the same), some very mild occasional foxing but otherwise clear and attractive. Erskine was a Scottish theologian, an Episcopalian who took some ideas from the Calvinists but was mostly convinced that God was a fountain of love and redemption. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 155 pages .

Collates complete. The Apocrypha is in the list of books and is separately signed, although the first gathering is signed Eee rather than A. The index is separately signed. Bible is [1428] pages. Title within double rule border. Bible has own title page, NT has special tp Thick octavo in possibly contemporary full leather with blind ruling, 5 raised bands. Leather is worn at the corners down to the card underneath, leather at joints starting to peel away, 5 raised bands, leather chipped off the top spine compartment showing the cord underneath. Dark blue cloth has remains of library spine label, gilt to spine, small white mark on front cover, moderate normal wear to corners/edges. Interior has normal library marks including pocket, interior otherwise clean and nice. John Jewel was a leading figure in the early Elizabethan Church of England. Bishop of the diocese of Salisbury (1559-71), he is best known as the apologist of the Elizabethan settlement of religion. This study concentratees on Jewel as apologist and controversialist; therefore it is neither a full biography nor a thorough study of his theology, although of necessity it is some of both. This is the variant of ESTC T66469, with no p. 43 in the errata page. ESTC shows author as William Oldys (1696-1761) or Anonymous. Probably original tree calf binding, front board detached, gilt ruling, corners rubbed, spine repaired probably in the 1800s with no gilt, rubbing and splitting to the spine. Book plate and stamps from the Law Society, this book was part of the Mendham Collection deaccessioned a few years ago. Some occasional foxing but other than the library marks, clean and unmarked. [24], 212, 212-523, 526-641, [12] pp. Text does not follow from 523-526 as per STC 14606. Marked "collated as complete" by Bernard Quaritch on the inside back cover. Small folio in brown calf. First edition with the signature of Sir Thomas Heneage, the Groom of the Stool for Henry VIII and a member of Queen Elizabeth's Privy Chamber. It was reported that the Queen flirted with Heneage, causing Elizabeth's favorite, Robert Dudley, to become jealous. Heaneage died in 1595 and was buried in Old St. Paul's Cathedral where his grave was destroyed in the Great Fire. There is now a monument mentioning him in the rebuilt cathedral. In good antiquarian condition with some scuffs to the leather, hinges cracking but holding. Woodcut initials and tail pieces. Mostly black letter throughout, with some italic and other typefaces. Original brown blindstamped cloth board covers are worn at edges, rubbed corners, backstrip with gilt is lifting, heavily chipped at top/bottom spine, joints cracking. Interior end papers very foxed, hinges starting, title page has owner inscript of Rev. W. Henry Wadleigh, presumably he of the Anglican church in Hamilton, Ontario. There are small pencil check marks and notes throughout, otherwise text is clean, book block is fairly sturdy. Aged (this is a real 1872 edition, not a modern one), still usable. ; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall .

Chesterfield: J. Roberts. Good with no dust jacket. 1831. First Edition. Hardcover. Viii + 99 pp. With the book plate of Sir Edmund Antrobus and the signature on the half title "To Lady Antrobus from her friend, the Author" (this should be the 2nd Bart, judging from the dates). 3/4 leather with original marbled paper hard boards. Leather is a bit rubbed and worn, spine gilt and decorations. Interior clean and nice, first free endpaper paper is folded and Sir Edmund's bookplate has transferred a ghost image. A nice copy of this scarce work of 9 sermons. Rev. Rodes once entertained Lord Byron at his mansion at Chesterfield and Sir Edmund's family owned the land on which stands Stonehenge. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 99 pages; Signed by Author .

Labels are darkened, spine tips a bit worn, library spine marks, interior library stamps but no pockets, many pages never separated and a few a little roughly separated, top edges bit dusty, a nice set, hard to find intact in an original edition. Heavy for international shipping. Joseph Bingham (September 1668 – 17 August 1723), was an English scholar and divine. His specialty was as a Ecclesiastical Historian. The leather is scuffed and very worn, boards are scuffed and worn, spine covering is mostly perished and boards are secured with shiny brown tape. The same tape is also used at the gutter on the top margin of the verso of the title and the first page of the preface. Occasional light check marks, otherwise clean and unmarked. A few pages have turned down corners and there is some moderate foxing throughout. But while the exterior is quite worn, the interior is still usable and surprisingly clean. Priced low to reflect condition. Very scarce first edition of this biography of Walker (1714-1761) , an Evangelical clergyman of the Church of England in Cornwall. He corresponded frequently with Wesley over matters of theology and practical church matters, as well. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 492 pages .
