First edition of a very uncommon early Carthusian German woodcut book, edited by Jodocus Hessus, It contains two portraits of the Carthusian Bibaut. The other 4 full-page illustrations represent the crucifixion, “ecce homo”, and Christ crowned with thorns, all by an anonymous German artist (they are sometimes attributed to Hans Brosamer). The book is a collection of sermons by Bibaut, a Carthusian prior-general (d.1535), edited by Hess, with a selection of sermons by him and his poem on the founding of the Carthusian order.This handsome post-incunable is in good antiquarian condition. This extremely rare, imposing and thick folio presents something of a mystery. It is 279 of 281 ff, lacking first two preliminary leaves, in handsome contemporary stamped leather over wooden boards. Initials supplied in red with many foliated and trailing, rubricated throughout, 30 lines, Gothic letter, lacking clasps. Wide-margined paper, handsomely and clearly printed, unsigned, early probably contemporary hand pagination throughout but often misnumbered; still collates complete except for the preliminary leaf/leaves. Interestingly, while collating, we realised that the first 7 leaves correspond to ISTC ig00644000, the rest to ig00645000 (both from the same printer, the same year) , with no text missing. (The "de sanctis" portion would add 96 leaves, not present here.) Rubricated initials throughout and touched with red throughout as well. Binding is probably a 19th century rebinding with leather spine and corners, cream paper boards, the spine with three raised bands and handwritten title and printer, along with a "1498" date -- ISTC dates it to 1495-1500 (ip00099000). Some normal wear to the binding, interior end papers have some oxidizing, light marginal soiling throughout, some scattered dampstaining in the bottom margins, occasional marginalia, one leaf has a tear in the lower margin, another leaf has a marginal restoration, a bit of gutter dampstaining at the rear, but otherwise clean and unmarked, very handsome. 157 short sermons "de tempore." A thick octavo bound with contemporary stamped pigskin spine over wooden boards, the boards are half pigskin and half burnished wood. Old hand-lettered spine title. With both original clasps (non-working). Contains two Sermones Medicinales, or Plague Sermons: Contra Pestilentiam, and De Fuga Pestis on Folios 144-152. Text printed in a gothic typeface in two columns throughout. Pagination (by folios) is continuous throughout. The De Tempore and the De festivitatibus Cristi are usually separated by another set of sermons but this time, they were obviously printed deliberately together and bound as such - not in WorldCat in this form. Leather is a bit rubbed and worn, spine gilt and decorations. Interior clean and nice, first free endpaper paper is folded and Sir Edmund's bookplate has transferred a ghost image. A nice copy of this scarce work of 9 sermons. Rev.
