An early labor novel, a fictional account of the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. Attractive copy of Saxton's second book, which "has as its background the city of Chicago and the yards of one of the midcontinent railroads from the year 1912 to the outbreak of World War II. The rather complex web of lives and events, spun out within an arbitrarily shifting time sequence, is primarily centered on the relationship between Communist railroad worker, Dave Spaas, and his wife Stephanie, although considerable attention ih the first half of the book is also given to Dave's Negro comrade, Pledger McAdams, whose gradula acceptance of white men and of Communism is effectively handled" (Rideout, p.268). The Populist NSML was formed two years prior with the aim to continue "the efforts made during [William Jennings Bryan's] presidential campaign of 1896 for national honor and sound money, and the education of people to a realization of the necessity for maintaining the gold standard" (cf. Results of a survey conducted in 1850 and 1851 led by Captain Joshua Barney of the United States Topographical Corps of Engineers for a rail line running from St. Louis to a point on the Arkansas River near Little Rock. The result was the Mississippi, Ouachita, and Red River Railroad, the first incorporated railroad in Arkansas. HOWES B-158 (errouneously giving the date 1853).

Overall Very Good, sound. It would seem a sign of the times that we might now describe some of the "Marvels" detailed in this book as the "Old West". However, in 1887, the lands west of the Missouri still held the promise of adventure and discovery, as well as opportunity. This book, containing six volumes, covers the marvels of nature, race, enterprise, mining, stock-raising, and agriculture. Original lithograph certificate (57.75x35.75cm.) printed in black on heavy cream stock, accomplished in calligraphic manuscript and hand-colored, with mounted original albumen photographic portrait lozenge (8cm in diameter). Stock has suffered some fairly heavy frame burn to extremities and verso (blank), along with some brief glue residue and paper flaws from where the stock was previously mounted (not affecting image or text). Still, overall Very Good, the colors and photograph vibrant. Initiation certificate to ORC member William A. Nye of the Pottsville Division No. 416, P&R Ry. (Philadelphia & Reading Railway), Caboose No. 90073, dated July 10, 1910.
