Backstrip torn on Vol. 2, partially detached; both volumes have material loss at spine crown and heel; boards show moderate rubbing, chipping and wear, especially to extremities. Textblocks foxed, with offsetting to text; ex libris and ownership signatures on ffeps; a Good reading copy, sound and complete. A chronicle of "the olden days" of Philadelphia, intended to serve as a record of the city's history and customs, as well as changes and improvements. This 1850 edition contains information on Philadelphia and surrounding counties, plus histories of local Native American tribes and European settlers, events leading to the Revolutionary War, plus sundry facts on climate, industry, geography, and miscellany.

A chronicle, in text and b/w photo-illustrations, of Austria-Hungary's newly formed capital city Budapest at the turn of the 20th century, and its development into a world city ("világváros") before war and revolution irrevocably altered the landscape both geographically and culturally. All text in Hungarian.

Maroon cloth boards, lettered in gilt on spine; viii, 309pp. Slight rubbing and wear; spine gilt a little dull; text clean, tight and unmarked - a solid, VG copy, lacking the presumed dustwrapper. First American edition, bound from British sheets. Title page is a cancel with the Doran imprint; spine cloth bears the original Hodder & Stoughton slug. Classic work on the sociology of rural villages and the changes wrought by advancing technology. Sturt (1863-1927) was a wheelwright by trade, and wrote from a rather unusual perspective - a sensitive, self-educated tradesman, documenting and eulogizing the passing of pre-industrial Britain. The first edition is somewhat uncommon.

Front pastedown has ownership stamp. Boards have light surface wear and soiling; front board margins are slightly sunned; pushing to upper edge of rear board. Spine also sunned, soiled, and worn, with sticker residue near heel. Boards overall Very Good or better. First edition printed in 1908, this text contains a transcription of the first census of the United States for Virginia, enumerating city/county inhabitants by age, sex, occupation, and race (including slaves/free citizens) as of 1790.

Photographer Camilo José Vergara documents a two-decade exploration of metropolitan ghettos and their residents. He uses successive photographs to track dramatic changes to these spaces over the years, as many former inner city residential/community areas are vacated and destroyed, while others are fortified, repurposed, or gentrified. Through his photography (b/w and color) and observations, Vergara illustrates the state of the American Ghetto, as it was in 1995.

Henry Collins Brown, founder of the Museum of the City of New York, showcases several photographs, paintings, engravings, and illustrations (in color and b/w) of New York City, from its founding to the early 1920's. Specifically, this book was "privately printed for Valentine's Manual and to be sold at the sign of the Dog and Duck, 15 East 40th Street, near the Publick Library, where is also to be found the best bed of asparagus on this Island", in anticipation of the city's upcoming tercentenary.

Photographer Jonas Bendiksen spent two years documenting individual lives, families, and homes in the slums of Nairobi (Kibera), Mumbai (Dharavi), Jakarta (Kampung Miskin), and Caracas (Los Barrios). Their stories, tragedies and dreams, are laid bare in this book, through personal histories and fold-out pictures. Bendiksen did not set out to create a "message", but to simply reflect the familiar human faces living in places that are so often dehumanized through conventional depictions of poverty.
