Description:
Boston: Arena Publishing, 1894. 1st edition. Ex-library from a Sunday School in NY state. A scarce Social Gospel novel about the meaning of Christianity. The issue is debated in the context of socialism by a Presbyterian clergyman and a retired schoolmaster in New England. The minister stakes his position with a sermon on "Socialism: Its Evils and its Cure." The schoolmaster takes the opposing view and declares, "'Socialist' is just another name for 'Christian.' Every man who loves justice, and hates tyranny, is a socialist, whether he knows it or not." (p. 247.) The minister undergoes a gradual conversion, unable to reconcile the teachings of Christ with the social inequities and problems of the day. He reconsiders his previous sermon and admits, "I made a mistake in confounding socialism with anarchy and lawlessness." (p. 255.) An interesting title from the progressive Arena press, whose mission was "Fiction of purpose, dealing with social, economic, and political problems." 8vo. Blue clothbound… Read More

Description:
New-York: D. Appleton, 1831. 1st edition of the first book published by Appleton. [Welsh, 4865.] A selection of Bible verses for inspiration and reflection. 192 pp. 64mo miniature, 2¾ by 2¼ inches. Bound in smooth brown cloth. Good with moderate wear. Remnants of the paper spine label. Text pages with expected toning and foxing. Blank endpapers lacking but otherwise complete and securely bound. A sound example of this scarce miniature, a notable book in American publishing history. D. Appleton & Co., was founded by dry goods merchant Daniel Appleton (1785-1849) and continued as a prominent publisher for more than a century. As the first title issued from its press, this book was already sufficiently scarce by the late 19th century that Appleton did not own a copy and had to advertise nationally to find one. A copy turned up in Maryland, and its owner exchanged her little volume for the largest book then published by Appleton. In 1902, Publisher's Weekly said "not more than six" copies were known to… Read More

A narrative of his pilgrimage to the Greek isle of Patmos, an early Christian center where biblical historians believe John the Apostle was exiled, received his apocalyptic visions, and wrote the Book of Revelation. An engaging travelogue, with material on the island's history, people, geography, churches and monasteries, and more. Illustrated with a portrait, b&w photographic plates, a map, and small text illustrations. Geil (1865-1925) was born in Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He gained fame as an unordained evangelist, explorer, lecturer, and author of ten books based on his travels to the Holy Land, the Mediterranean, and elsewhere. He was an expert on China and is credited as the first American to walk the entire Ming section of the Great Wall of China. This book is inscribed to a Rev. C.B. Perkins. A study of "the excessive sexuality of the Middle Ages," an era marked by "unrestrained wildness and the practice of perversions unknown in earlier times."
