Eccentrically beautiful, tight and bright later printing of this 1920 production (originally published in a 1909 periodical), reissued in this funky but fascinating form. Not the usual side-by-side English-Japanese text, but English fills the top half of each page and Japanese the bottom half. Truly uncommon and in exceptional condition.

A tight and quite attractive first edition of this Pulitzer Prize winner by the American playwright and screenwriter (1896-1955). Pages vii and viii list the original stage cast from the Playwrights' Company production of 1938, with of course Raymond Massey leading the way as Lincoln -- which leads to this copy's fun autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is an Autograph Note Signed penned by the third and last wife of Massey, Dorothy Whitney Massey, writing and signing on behalf of her husband. 1p, 6" X 7", n.p., 1939 September 15. Addressed to Arnold Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln scholar). Very good. On "Raymond Massey" letterhead, it notes: "Thank you so much for your kind note. Offprint from the February 11, 1929 "Congressional Record," being Hertz's speech before the New York Schoolmasters' Club, introduced by Pennsylvania representative Louis T. McFadden (1876-1936). The printed mailing envelope, bearing McFadden's printed franking signature, is addressed in the congressman's hand. MONAGHAN 3092 note.

Mild edgewear, with deckled page edges a bit age toned as usual. First of this trilogy reprinting George Bancroft's Lincoln speech of 12 February 1866, James G. Blaine's Garfield speech of 27 February 1882 and John Hay's McKinley speech of 27 February 1902. Strangely, there is no title page in this copy (which tells us this was printed in 1903 by the Government Printing Office in Washington, DC), though there's also no evidence of any missing leaf.
