Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. Two original folds. On letterhead of "The New Republic" listing him as one of its editors, Cowley thanks this admirer for birthday wishes. Large and bold full signature. Cowley (1898-1989) was a noted editor, writer, critic, historian and chronicler of the "Lost Generation" of which he was one of the last survivors.
