Vol I 374 pages, Vol II 411 Pages, 14.5 cm's by 22 cm's, 1328 grams. The first edition of this biography of Gregory the Seventh, Bowden was an English writer on church matters. He was a close friend of John Henry Newman, who described their relationship in his Apologia. In the spring of 1840 he published his Life of Gregory the Seventh. This work had been first suggested to him by Newman. Covers not attached Vol I, Front cover loose Vol II, full leather, slight foxing to just a couple of prelim pages and very good and better thereafter. At the age of sixteen he entered the Society of Jesus, and was appointed successively professor of rhetoric, philosophy and moral theology, in various Jesuit colleges. His success as a preacher in the provinces led his superiors to call him to Paris in 1669 to occupy for a year the pulpit of the church of St. Louis. Owing to his eloquence he was speedily ranked in popular estimation with Corneille, Racine, and the other leading figures during the height of Louis XIV's reign.
