Description:
1885. Soft Cover. Very Good binding. [8] pp., illus. As issued, printed on linen. Light fraying to the edges, but largely well preserved. Light soiling and toning throughout, but a very presentable copy. It is difficult to tell as this Hoffmann's tale has been reprinted frequently, but it is possible that this copy is missing a wrapper that may have had publication information. Nevertheless, an an uncommon edition of Hoffmann's tale of a girl who played with matches, heedless of her cats' insistence that she shouldn't, "You'll burn to death, if you do so, / Your parents have forbid, you know." (Spoiler alert) Against all odds, her apron string catches and while her cats raise the alarm as best they can, poor Pauline is consumed in flames and in moments nothing but ash and her red shoes remains. While the tale has a strange charm(?), the charm of this multicolored printing on linen is something else entirely. The lyrics on the lower half of the page and a colored illustrations grace the top. Description:
London: Dean & Sons, 11, Ludgate Hill, 1855. Soft Cover. Very Good binding. Octavo. [10] pp., illus. In printed wrappers; advertisement on the verso of the front wrapper; text concludes on the recto of the rear wrapper. The five interior leaves have printing on the recto only; all illustrated and with hand-coloring. No date, but based on the location of the offices of Dean & Sons, this was issued between 1845 and 1871. No illustrator or author noted, but one vignette with W. C. Harrison engraved at the bottom corner. This copy has been skillfully repaired, mending the folios at the spine and resewn; the wrappers have been similarly mended, the repair being barely visible. Only one copy located in OCLC the description of which matches this copy and is likely the same (OCLC: 932901513). Remarkably uncommon and charming book.

Description:
Philadelphia: Printed by Lydia Bailey for Jonson and Warner, 1811. Original Wrappers. Very Good+ binding. Small 12mo. 72 pp., frontis. First authorized American edition. As issued, in stiff speckled wrappers. One page shows minor loss to the margin because it was printed on an imperfect sheet--no loss of text; some ink smearing to that leaf only. Generally, this is a remarkably nice copy of an early American edition printed by Lydia Bailey. Bailey took over her husband Robert Bailey's print shop after his death in 1808 and ran in until she retired and closed the shop in 1861. Karen Nipps in her biographical sketch writes, "Bailey was the master printer of a shop that at its peak was one of the largest in the city, employing more than forty workers. . . . [S]he transformed her husband's floundering business into one of the busiest printing establishments in Philadelphia. Although previous generations of printers' widows had continued their husbands' careers, they had done so only long enough to… Read More
