Boston: Houghton, Mifflin & Co, 1901. Original Wrappers. Good binding. Octavo. 25, [1], [2 (blank)] pp. First edition. As issued, stapled into printed wrappers. Front wrapper detached with some loss along the bottom edge, but present; lengthwise crease to the pamphlet as a whole from being folded. An interesting address that compares the Civil War with the Second Boer War and how calamitous it would have been had Lee not surrendered but followed Jefferson Davis's vision of the Civil War having "entered upon a new phase. . . . Relieved from the necessity of guarding particular points, our army will be free to move from point to point, to strike the enemy in detail far from his base" (qtd on p. 4). Uncommon.

1805. Original Wrappers. Very Good binding. 12mo. 19, [1 (blank)] pp. First edition. As issued, stitched in plain wrapper; a few leaves unopened. Light wear to the covers including some silverfishing to the top inner margin of the rear wrapper and diminishing through the next several leaves; light soiling, but largely a remarkably copy. Deaccessioned as a library duplicate, the only indication being a mid-20th century gift stamp deep in the inner margin of p. 3; contents clean. An address criticizing incumbent Pennsylvania governor Thomas McKean and recommending Simon Snyder as governor in the 1805 election. While Snyder lost to McKean in a contentious 1805 contest, he would ultimately win in 1808 and serve three terms. The language early in the address is salient: "Principles and not men, were the foundations, on which American independence was established .... Principles and not men have been the objects of contest, ever since, between the several parties which have arisen under our government;… Read More

Description:
Tuscaloosa, AL: M. D. J. Slade, 1854. Original Wrappers. Very Good binding. Octavo. 25, [1] pp. First edition. As issued, stitched in salmon-colored printed wrappers; interestingly, all the "N"s in the subtitle are reversed on both the wrapper and the title page. There is a bleached area to the top margin of the front wrapper and to a much lesser degree, the rear wrapper; faint tideline to the top margin of the first few leaves; vertical crease through the entire pamphlet with some creasing to the top third of most leaves; early number stamp on the top of the front wrapper; very little wear. A fairly presentable copy of this uncommon speech by Barnard. A New England-born academic, Barnard spent two decades in the south, most of it on the faculty of the University of Alabama. He returned north at the outbreak of the Civil War and before the war's conclusion would become the 10th president of Columbia University and was instrumental in shaping it into one of the leading universities. Description:
1791. 9" x 7.5." Writing on recto and verso. Near fine. A very nice example of an ALS by General Anthony Wayne. Wayne was an instrumental part of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, entering the fray as a colonel and at the conclusion of war, a major general. It is difficult to overstate Wayne's contribution to the American cause. After the war he served two years in Pennsylvania General Assembly and was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention. In 1791 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Georgia, serving in that role until his death in 1796. Interestingly, this letter addressing a financial matter was written the day he took his seat in Congress. One might imagine he was using his new position to put some additional authority behind his request. This letter appears to be addressed to Congressman Joseph Clay. Oxford American National Biography. Transcribed in full: "Savannah 4th March 1791 / Dear Sir / I was favored with yours of the 2nd inst. inclosing an… Read More

Harrisburg, PA: W. M. French | printed by Jones & Harvie, 1885. Broadside. Broadside. 8" x 5.25." Printed in red and black in cream cardstock. Large engraving fills the recto with French's advertisements for their cigars around the border. Light wear only. Very good to near fine. An interesting keepsake with a synopsis of Harris's tale, printed on the verso, describing a group of inebriated Native Americans kidnapping Harris because he wouldn't give them more rum. Harris's enslaved man, Hercules, brought aid from a neighboring tribe to save Harris just in the nick of time. And the two lived happily ever after. Take that for what it's worth.
