Description:
Edinbugh: Joanna Robson, 2019. Hard Cover. Near Fine binding. 12 cm x 12 cm x 12 mm. Limited edition, number 22 of 30 copies signed by Robson. Four lastercut panels on black card stock between two boards in patterned cloth, with instruction tri-fold for displaying the artist's book in a cube or an accordion, all housed in a signed and numbered tray and sleeve. A very nice, clean copy with limited, if any, shelfwear. Of the book, Robson writes: "'Vasilisa and the Witch's Fire' depicts a scene from the Russian fairytale Vasilisa the Beautiful, a story that sees its heroine Vasilisa overcome the obstacles put before her by the witch Baba Yaga. . . . The lasercut booklet illustrates the heroine's escape home across the forest at night, armed with a mysterious glowing skull. It's an eerie tale that has not left my imagination since I read the tale as a child." A remarkable artist's book.

The binding is very bright and well preserved; contents are clean; glassing wrapper is worn at the extremities, but for some minor chipping, it is largely complete. The lidded box, on the other hand, is in pieces and missing one of the rails; nevertheless, mostly present. It appears to have done its job in protecting the book. A beautifully reprinting of the text of the first edition of Walton's classic, possibly the highlight of fishing literature. The pages are graced with numerous black-and-white decorations in addition to a color frontispiece and nice scenes of gentlemen fishing done in elegantly muted shades of green, blue, and brown by American artist Frank Adams, known for his children's illustrations. 1885. Soft Cover. Very Good binding. [8] pp., illus. As issued, printed on linen. Light fraying to the edges, but largely well preserved. Light soiling and toning throughout, but a very presentable copy. It is difficult to tell as this Hoffmann's tale has been reprinted frequently, but it is possible that this copy is missing a wrapper that may have had publication information. Nevertheless, an an uncommon edition of Hoffmann's tale of a girl who played with matches, heedless of her cats' insistence that she shouldn't, "You'll burn to death, if you do so, / Your parents have forbid, you know." (Spoiler alert) Against all odds, her apron string catches and while her cats raise the alarm as best they can, poor Pauline is consumed in flames and in moments nothing but ash and her red shoes remains. While the tale has a strange charm(?), the charm of this multicolored printing on linen is something else entirely. The lyrics on the lower half of the page and a colored illustrations grace the top.
