Bennington, VT: William Haswell, 1825. Disbound. Good binding. 12mo. 23, [1 (blank)] pp. Removed from binding; light foxing throughout; contemporary ink pagination indicating its placement in the volume from which it was removed. Early religious tract. Sabin and McCorison tentatively posit printing dates of 1813 and 1812 respectively, while Gilman puts it at 1825. William's father, Anthony Haswell was a Boston, then Worcester printer during the Revolution and moved his family to Bennington in 1781 becoming the second printer in Vermont. A nice imprint from a line of notable Bennington printers. Sabin 99138; Vermont Imprints 1345; Gilman, "Bibliography of Vermont," p. 14.

A bit of rippling to the half title from binding, but a very sharp copy of this exhaustive and scholarly history.

This copy is warmly presented to Eppa Hunton IV who was a director of the Virginia Diocesan Library; a nice inscription by the treasurer of the same organization is on the first blank. Haynes 14584.

Lacking final 4 leaves (7 pages of text and a blank). Disbound. Binding remains on the spine; ex-library copy with perforation-stamps on title and the leaf following; generally age toned, soiled, and dog-eared, but fairly solid research copy despite the lacking 7 pages. Sole edition of this Calvinist/Puritan treatise by a prominent member of the Westminster Assembly. The address "to the Reader" states that the book is "the summe of sundry Lectures deliuered in mine own Charge" St. Magnus, London, and that some had accused him of altering what he had preached before publishing it. Some foxing and toning; faint institutional blind stamp on the final leaf; largely a reasonable copy of an uncommon work by the Church of England theologian. ESTC R875.

Providence, RI: Bennett Wheeler, 1785. Octavo. 30, [2 (blank)], [7], [1 (blank)] pp. First edition. As issued, stitched in self-wrappers. Wrappers are a bit soiled, but largely a very nice, copy. Faint and indecipherable contemporary owner name at the top of the front wrapper. While the pamphlet is undated and many authorities including Evans ascribes it a date of 1779, Alden identifies two issues of this pamphlet: the first on ordinary paper was printed 1782 or after based on the dated watermarks, and this second issue on thick paper with watermarked paper seen in Wheeler printings of 1785. Alden tentatively dates this issue as 1785. An uncommon sermon for a significant colonial figure--Foster was a dedicated to the cause of American independence from Great Britain and while he was a colonel in the militia during the American Revolution, his greatest contributions were elsewhere. Staining to the inner portion of the first five leaves and, less prominent, some toning to the lower inner margin of the last few leaves as well as the verso of the final leaf, otherwise generally clean. An uncommon memorial sermon for the Roger Wolcott who in addition to a distinguished military career culminating in his being placed second in command of New England forces during King George's War, he also had a robust political career from Justice of the Peace to chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court to colonial governor. Several pages of the sermon are given over to outlining Wolcott's life from his humble childhood forward. Printed by Thomas Green, the first printing in Hartford who set up his press only a few years before this in 1764. A bold, bordered and strongly inked title page make this a striking imprint. Some numbers have additional promotional material after the Monthly Extracts, paginated independently. Pagination available upon request, but it will be overly complicated--the body of most issues are about 72 pages. As issued, stitched into printed wrappers. The Christian Observer was started and edited by William Hey in 1802 until his death in 1819. The periodical ran the better part of the 19th century under various editors. Despite more than 70 years of publication, issues are relatively uncommon in the trade; and issued in their original wrappers are much more so. Uncommon address in remarkable condition given how fragile it is; light shelfwear and just a bit of chipping to the wrappers; laid in is a single bifolium titled, "State Mission of the Virginia Baptists. A Brief Review"; printed on 3 pages, this is a review by William Ellyson (1892).

Relatively light shelfwear and soiling including a vertical scratch in the center of the front cover; spine is a trifle darkened; rear board is a bit bumped on the fore-edge; contents clean. A very curious work by one most known as serious conservationist and developer. The seeds of this off-topic work for Kinney were planted when, in his words, "twenty years ago the fact was brought to my attention that two of the sovereign States of our Union had lost population between the years 1860 and 1870." He goes on to puzzle how this might be with New Hampshire and Maine in the face of immigration from Canada and Ireland, before lighting on topics "taken from serious publications": abortion and contraception. A reasonable copy of one side of "wordy war" between Francis Cheynell and Henry Hammond over the orthodoxy of Hammond's Practicall Catechisme. ESTC R201473.

In contemporary marbled boards backed in cloth; no titling. A solid copy. Occasional pencil marginalia and a sticker on the front free endpaper with inked number, else clean. Four plates (one folding) serve as frontispieces for the first three works. One of the plates was over-trimmed at the time of binding with some very minor loss. Remarkably uncommon material.

Wrappers are moderately soiled but only lightly worn; vertical crease the entire pamphlet where it was folded; contents show light and occasional spotting otherwise clean. Wilmer was born in Alexandria, VA. He graduated from Yale University in 1836 and then Union Theological Seminary in Richmond a few years later. He was ordained in Richmond and served throughout rural Virginia. In the midst of the Civil War, Wilmer was ordained Episcopal Bishop of Alabama. This present address is interesting in that it tangles with the racial complexity of Jim Crow south. Covers are stained and silverfished partly obscuring the title; early phone numbers in ink on the back cover; minor toning to the contents, but generally clean. A short memoir by Hughes with in text illustration as well as many tributes by his colleagues in the ministry comprise the second half of the volume. Remarkably uncommon in commerce and OCLC locates only two institutions holding copies, not surprisingly, both are in Alabama.
