The boards are a bot bowed, otherwise this is quite a good clean copy in a dustwra;pper which is a little worn and browned. [The play was performed for many years at the outdoor theatre at Leksand. The simple plot comprises - "The young peasants Mats and Marit are about to marry when a disease breaks out in their village. Marit gets accused of being a witch and sentenced to death. After she has been burnt alive Mats leaves the village and seeks a way to make God sending Marit back from heaven onto earth. He fails and loses his personal integrity. Small slim 12mo, pp 80, uncut edges, grey paper-covered boards, rubbed and frayed, joints cracking on the spine, but all still tight and sound. [Stephen Gosson (April 1554 - 13 February 1624) was an English satirist. He was baptized at St George's church, Canterbury, on 17 April 1554. He entered Corpus Christi College, Oxford, 1572, and on leaving the university in 1576 he went to London. In 1598 Francis Meres in his Palladis Tamia mentions him with Sir Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, Abraham Fraunce and others as the "best for pastorall", but no pastorals of Gosson's are extant. He is said to have been an actor, and by his own confession he wrote plays, for he speaks of Catiline's Conspiracies as a "Pig of mine own Sowe."
