Description:
London: Hodder & Stoughton [1912]. Very Good+ in the publisher's brick-red cloth. Quarto. Both the spine and the decorative front board are lushly stamped in black and in gilt, still brilliant. Top-edge gilt. Pictorial endpapers. 286pps., plus 27 beautiful, full-color, tipped-in plates with titled tissue-guards. There is mild rubbing wear to the extremities and previous owner's name has been neatly penned on the ffep. Also, it appears as though the front hinge may have been professionally repaired; there is splitting along the endpaper, though all material is present, closed, and the binding is quite sound. The text is in bright, clean condition and all plates are pristine. A beautiful volume for those with an interest in Egypt or who appreciate great art. ".I endeavoured, in a former book on Egypt, to give my first impressions while the glamour of the East had not been dimmed by familiarity; and the kind reception of that, my first literary attempt, has encouraged me to write again… Read More

Description:
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1923. Very Good+ in a Very Good+ dustjacket. Brown boards quarterbound in black cloth. The spine is stamped in gilt; the decorative front panel, black-printed, has a paste-on label of an Indian brave. Quarto. Yellow topstain. 274pps., with numerous illustrations by the artist with three of the plates being in full-color. Early printing: 1923 (the same year of the first edition ) on the title-page, L-X on the copyright page). There is superficial insect damage near the top of the front joint and bumping to the upper tips which has caused the top corner of the textblock to be slightly crimped. Also, a previous owner's name has been neatly penned on the ffep. Otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. The price-clipped dustjacket, glossy in a new mylar sleeve, has modest chipping at the extremities and light wear along the top-edge; the Remington paste-on illustration is in fine, colorful condition. Description:
New York: Putnam's, 1905. Very Good in the publisher's light green cloth. Both the spine and the front board are decoratively stamped in gilt; the front board is stamped, also, in blind. 443pps., with 88 tissue-guarded plates of works in ivory -- from prehistoric times to the nineteenth century. There is modest rubbing wear to the board-edges, with the head of the spine having two small nicks in the cloth. Internally, there is a split in the binding (with much of the webbing disclosed) between the third fep and the half-title page; the hinge is, nonetheless, sound with the webbing all intact. A strip of book-repair cloth has reattached the frontispiece: all other pages are tightly bound. All text and each of the plates are exceptionally clean and bright -- many pages are, in fact, unopened (uncut): it seems that the original owner was primarily concerned with the illustrations, many of which are quite striking. In all, a very nice copy of this intriguing title. "...The use of ivory as a… Read More

Decorative gray, black, and orange endpapers. 239pps., with numerous gray, black, and orange illustrations, plus 16 full-page, full-color plates. Modest rubbing wear to the board-edges and light soiling and rubbing to the paste-label, which is in very nice condition. The binding is shaken, though sound, with all pages and plates intact. Also, there is a small tear (1/2") in the endpaper near the top of the rear hinge; this is not a structural problem, but a slight cosmetic one and all the material is yet present. Description:
London: Taylor and Hessey, 1824. Newly restored, this item has been quarterbound in calfskin with brilliantly marbled paper over boards. The spine is gold-tooled as is the red leather spine-label. New endpapers. 195pps., plus 5 pages of advertisements in the back. The text is in good condition and -- consistent with its age -- has the sporadic soiling, thumbing, and tearing; it is, nonetheless, whole and bright with very little in the way of foxing. A couple of pages (only) have notations in the margins and the signature of an early owner (of the same dipped pen) is neatly placed in the top corner of the title-page. A scarce item and, now, with repairs, quite presentable. Hazlitt is widely considered one of the great English critics and essayists. He influenced a good many of his contemporaries. As Keats said of him: his work is like 'a whale's back in a sea of prose.' Chapters include: Mr. Angerstein's Collection, Dulwich Gallery, The Marquis of Stafford's Gallery, Pictures at… Read More
