The author was born in Venezuela, was a mercenary in the Spanish-American War and the 1st Sino-Japanese War, returned home to take part in Venezuela's revolution, and got into trouble with the new Venezuelan government, which forced his exile. He is supposed to have worked with Sandino in Nicaragua, as a cowboy in Arizona and joined in the Alaska gold rush. The events of this book recount his experiences in the 1st World War, when he joined the army of the Ottoman Empire and witnessed firsthand the Armenian genocide. This copy INSCRIBED to another renowned adventurer; Alexander Hamilton Rice, who directed a base hospital in France during WWI, married Titanic survivor Eleanor Widener and as the founder of Harvard's Institute of Geographical Exploration organized 7 successful expeditions into the Amazon country. Apparently the 1st printing of this little history, later published by Lathourakis' own Tabula Rasa Press. A 3" x 2.25" miniature in decorated boards, vg+; The front endpapers were stuck together and have been pulled apart (binding flaw I think) but it didn't do much damage. 57 pp. incl. illustrations & a map.

London: William S. Orr, 1840. First Edition . Hardcover. Good+. 1st edition, good plus in a fine binding by Stoakley of Cambridge which has seen some wear. In red pebbled leather with all-edge gilt; stunning dcentelles and marbled endpapers. Corners a bit worn, the spine top more so; spots of rubbing here and there on spine. Spine also darkened, tops of boards as well. Internally there is occasional light to moderate foxing. The engraved title page and facing frontis have ghosted onto one another, so look the worst of all. 356 pp. + 28 steel-engraved plates plus other woodcut plates and many, many woodcut vignettes.

Editio Secunda, Second Edition, stated; Volume I only, apparently the only volume published as Freire died in 1798; important history of Portuguese law, not to my knowledge translated into English; Latin text only, typeface uses the long 's' and the date requires a key to decipher it, thanks to a short-lived trend in altered Roman numerals. 8vo, binding appears contemporary, full leather with stamped devices on spine and painted pattern on boards, all edges in red chalk; good+ (boards bowed and edges worn; leather on joints worn; scratches to front board; rear board worn and scraped; leather on spine cracked; spine ends worn and bumped; scrape to title piece on spine; corners bumped and worn to boards; chip to leather and creasing to top corner of rear board; top edge darkened; scrape to red chalk on bottom edge; pastedowns darkened from binding glue; pink Portuguese bookseller sticker on front pastedown; cracked at first blank… Read More

Thick 4to., orange cloth boards with blue stamped title on spine. No dustjacket. Good (cocked; boards bowed, marked, soiled and rubbed; spine toned, edges bumped; edges dustsoiled; light foxing to eps, but pages clean, though toning). 458pp.

Paris: Chez Lotlin/Chez La Combe, 1770. Hardcover. Good+. Instructions for Lords and their Valets". Possibly a 1st edition; the 'Approbation' is dated 1769. This is extremely scarce; we haven't heard of another copy. I had no luck finding the identity of Monsieur "R**", but I don't read French. Good plus, in a very old binding, possibly contemporary. Full leather finished with a marbling effect (boards slt. bowed), gilt borders, gilt title and many devices on spine, marbled endpapers, red chalk edges. Corners worn and bumped, spine ends worn, external front hinge weak so that leather is beginning to split. (2" near the top). The text has been trimmed for the binding, but the margins were quite large. The tail of a trimmed-off owner's name appears at the top of the title page. The 18th-century marbled paper is quite beautiful; the binder was a bit clumsy and there are creases in both pastedowns. A splay of foxing on the half-title page, but nowhere else. Text… Read More

Has 568 pp. incl. index; many illustrations including 4 Woodbury-types (an uncommon printing process which makes photographs seem very lucid and 3-dimensional); and in the rear, folding maps; a Snow Map, a Race Map, a Language Map, a Faith Map, a Political Map, chart of 3 Isometric Views, and a chart of 4 Vertical Sections. There is also a folding chart, 'Genealogy of the Rajas of Jummo', to accompany Appendix 6. The binding is 3/4 leather, very worn, and professionally rebacked. The original leather of the spine has been preserved; the title can barely be read. Marbled boards (matching endpapers) rubbed, bookplate on front pastedown.
