There is a tear and wrinkle at the bottom edge of the leaf for pages 5/6 (Introduction). The rest of the book appears clean. Bilingual edition. Spanish is on the left-hand page and the English translation is on the facing right-hand page. Juan Francisco Manzano (1797-1854) was a slave of African descent born in the Mantanzas Province of Cuba. Both of his parents were slaves, and he grew up on a sugar plantation. He was raised as a domestic slave, and his first mistress showed him literature and plays. He learned to write and wrote some plays and poems himself. He autobiography was begun while he was still in captivity. His was the first slave narrative published in Spanish America, and it is the only account of 19th century Cuban slavery.
