Description:
[New York]: [Nagel and Lewis], [1855?]. Large color lithograph of a complex, raucous street scene in New York. Signed in the plate “D. Benecke/ NY/ 55.” The image measures approximately 31 x 22”, matted, framed and glazed, overall approximately 39 x 30”. Blank margins approximately 1/4”; faint creases; not examined out of the frame and mat; the title and printing information would be on the bottom margin, but is either lacking or covered in this example, which is in excellent condition. Humorous and realistic at the same time, this is a lively, colorful, chaotic scene of three loaded horse-drawn sleighs (an omnibus features a portrait, apparently of the late Zachary Taylor in military uniform, on the door) and numerous individuals in front of Barnum’s Museum, featuring a band on the balcony. An African-American is struck by a snowball; a newsboy, various visitors, drivers and passengers are depicted as well.
