Description:
1850. Remarkable album of original watercolours celebrating the life- world of the literati. The album forms an intriguing catalogue of traditional Chinese scholarly objects including Buddhist statues, vases, wrist-rests, musical instruments, scholar-stones, hand scrolls, miniature ornamental trees and tray landscapes. While similar albums of watercolours illustrating costumes, punishments, trades, and natural beauties are sometimes encountered, such an album dedicated to objects of scholarship and meditation is a rare and special find. In Confucian philosophy, the literati enjoyed a highly-esteemed role, cultivating detachment from the day-to-day bustle of worldly affairs to achieve sanguine and lucid intellectual insight. This album lovingly captures the cherished objects of classical Chinese scholarship, and so offers a rare insight into this bygone way of life. Mid-nineteenth century album bearing woodblock title stamp ‘Chinese House Ornaments', containing twelve original…

Description:
Paris, 1910. An elegant Edwardian catalogue of hand-printed silk shirts, of oriental and Persian design, organic and of the most beautiful quality. "No more corsets, bustles and shoulder pads; they will wear soft, supple, fluid draperies, in soft and melted colours. Finally, the garment adapts to the body... shaped according to the silhouette." -Arthur Liberty Established in 1875, Liberty & Co. created a legacy of great British textile design, opening its first Parisian store after success at the 1889 Exposition Universale. Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843 -1917) shared his circle with pre-Raphaelite painters Dante Gabriel Rosetti and John Everet Millais, and their mutual delight for the ornamentation of medieval illuminated manuscripts suffused their work with flowers. This catalogue dates from Liberty's move to its grand premises on the Boulevard des Capucines. Octavo, 4 leaves, colour illustrations throughout, a fine copy.

Description:
Sydney: Kemp & Fairfax, 1842. First Edition. Rare, and very fine: a presentation copy (inscribed on the front endpaper to Walter Wrottersley "from the translator") of an unusual publication for this period in Australia, a translation of an obscure commentary on Aristotle. Almost nothing of a philosophical bent was published in Australia before the 1850s and the creation of the Universities of Sydney and Melbourne. Perhaps the earliest philosophical work printed in Sydney? Elwin says that he translated part of the eighteenth-century writer Metastasio's critical observations on the Poetics in order to place "such portion as appeared to be likely to engage the attention, as well from the nature of the immediate topic, as from the spirited manner in which it is treated... within reach of the English reader". Metastasio, or Pietro Antonio Domenico Trapassi, is best known today because Mozart used his "La Clemenzo di Tito" as the basis for his libretto. Ferguson originally entered the translator as Elwin…

Description:
London: James Carpenter, 1843. Fifth edition of this beautifully produced but practical guide to colour in painting, which uses works by old masters such as Titian, Van Dyck and Rubens as a guide. The author, John Burnet (1784 - 1868) was a Scottish engraver and painter who exhibited with the Royal Academy and was awarded a fellowship with the Royal Society. The intelligence and confidence of his writing reflects more than Burnet's heightened distinction as an artist and a craftsman. Much inspired by the lectures of Joshua Reynolds, a philosophy of colour comes into existence through Burnet's comparative appraisal of these works. Quarto, bound in the original cloth-backed boards, paper titling label on front board, eight hand-coloured engraved plates, a very good copy.
