Description:
Melbourne: Palace Theatre, 1922. First Edition. A memento of the first theatrical production to run for two hundred consecutive performances in Melbourne. Souvenir programme: Thursday, October 5th, 1922. Ada Reeve (3 March 1874 - 5 October 1966) was born in London, beginning her career on the stage and screen when she was only four years old. Ten years later, after a serious decline in the health of her father, Charles Reeves née Samuel Isaacs, the family relied upon Ada for financial support. Life in the music hall gave way to a life of international acclaim. An extraordinary woman, the talent of Ada Reeve saw her in near continuous employment for almost eighty years. Quarto, illustrated paper wrappers bound with the original tie, 18 pages, creatively illustrated with photographs (sometimes set against a backdrop of line drawings) throughout, slight marking, a very good copy.

Description:
Melbourne: Allan & Co, 1937. First Thus. With the success of the first three song books written and composed by Annie Rentoul and Georgette Peterson and illustrated by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, other editions were inevitable. This collection (the "Imperial Edition, No. 394"), brings together seventeen of the best-loved tunes including the favourites "A Little Aboriginee", "Baby Bear" and "Corroboree", in a smaller format for ease of use by children. Marcie Muir says these tunes, ‘made a lasting contribution to the life of Australian children. For many years, children were familiar with these songs, whether from learning them when being taught to play the piano, from singing them at kindergarten, or from familiarity with the books and drawings'. This ephemeral edition is quite scarce with a cover design by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Extraordinary piece of post-colonial Australian social history. Octavo, bound in original illustrated wrappers, some browning to the page edges, in very good condition.

Description:
London: Augener Ltd in Association with Adam and Charles Black, 1911. H. Willebeek le Mair [Henriette]. Henriette Willebeek le Mair (1889-1966) was a precocious child artist, her first book being published at the tender age of fifteen. She was actively encouraged by her parents and received instruction from the noted Parisian illustrator, Maurice Boutet de Monvel. Le Mair illustrated a total of fourteen books in her distinctive style characterised by gentle forms and subdued and sophisticated colouring. Before her conversion of Sufi Islam, Le Mair ran an nursery in her home and used the children as models for her art. The present edition is a very beautiful book: Adam and Charles Black were renowned for the quality and finesse of their colour plate reproduction. 'Our Old Nursery Rhymes' is one such book as the colour production is neither bold nor washed out and the publishers have faithfully reproduced the gentle tones the author intended for her beautiful plates. Oblong quarto, gilt lettering and…

Description:
San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1929. First Edition. One of an edition of 325 copies signed by the author. Printed by the Brothers Johnson at the Windsor Press, handset type on handmade Arches paper. Finely reasoned essay on poetry venturing from the songs of the Navajo to a lengthy discussion on Chinese poems and Wordsworth. 'It is not necessary that culture bring about the death of poetry, as it did in the Rome of Virgil. The cynics are wrong who see in our future no place for an art which belongs, they say, to the childhood of the race. The head of a man and the heart of a child working together as in the Chinese have made possible with one race and may make possible with any race, even in the thick of the most intricate culture, the persistence of the purest poetry.' Witter Bynner. Limited edition of 325 signed copies. Small slim quarto, original red cloth, small neat previous owner's inscription on inner cover, back board partially sunned, else fine.
